Question about Microsoft Windows XP Professional SP2

Windows XP Home Ed. SP-3 and Windows Firewall

Out of nowhere came this problem.
Whenever I turn on, or reboot, my computer (Dell Optiplex) and try to activate my browser (Firefox) to access the internet, I experience a long delay (approx 1 min.) where Firefox says "waiting for www.blah-blah-blah.com" and after that long delay, bam! I get a connection. So, I shut down a check my Windows Firewall settings, all is turned On.
So then I do a reboot and then check my Windows Firewall settings and it tells me "Due to unidentified problems, Windows cannot display firewall settings". but after about a minute I can access the settings fine?
I don't know what is causing this 1-min delay for Windows Firewall to "get its act together"?
Can someone help me pls. Any recommendations appreciated.
Thank you.
Marv

It sounds like you may need to do some maintenance on your system. You may have too many programs loading at startup (the long delay), you may have some malware in the system, or you may have some kind of file corruption that's preventing the security center from working correctly....

  • To begin with, I recommend you follow the first 4 steps of these malware removal protocols to scan for problems, and remove any that mbam finds.
  • Then, using instructions here, here and here, run chkdsk on your system and take a look at the winlogon entry in the event viewer after it runs to see if some file corruption was causing problems.
  • Take a look at this article and apply needed adjustments to optimize your system.
  • Work through the steps in this general maintenance guide to improve performance, and see this guide to streamline the boot process.
  • Make sure you go to windows update and check for updates for your hardware or software, and check to see if there's a new firefox update you haven't installed.
  • If you're still experiencing problems after following the steps above and rebooting, use this article to understand how the event viewer can help you to diagnose the cause of the problem and report back with the results...We'll be happy to help you sort it out from there....

I hope this information allows you to resolve this issue. If you need further assistance, please post back with a comment to this thread.
If I've managed to answer your question or solve a problem, please take just a moment to rate this post....thanks!

Reset bios

Installing a fresh operating system is a good option, and there might be a feature in the BIOS to restore the system to factory defaults. Information on how to do this:

Windows XP: Dell PC Restore

Using PC Restore:

1. Turn on the computer.

During the boot process, a blue bar with www.dell.com appears at the top
of the screen.

2. Immediately upon seeing the blue bar, press <Ctrl><F11>.
If you do not press <Ctrl><F11> in time, let the computer finish
starting, and then restart the computer again.

NOTICE: If you do not want to proceed with PC Restore, click Reboot.

3. Click Restore and click Confirm.
The restore process takes approximately 6 to 10 minutes to complete.

4. When prompted, click Finish to reboot the computer.

NOTE: Do not manually shut down the computer. Click Finish and let the computer
completely reboot.

5. When prompted, click Yes.

The computer restarts.

Because the computer is restored to its original
operating state, the screens that appear, such as the End User License
Agreement, are the same ones that appeared the first time the computer
was turned on.

6. Click Next.
The System Restore screen appears and the computer restarts.

7. After the computer restarts, click OK.
