RESTORING THE FACTORY IMAGE
The Restore Disc that came with your system contains
two utilities:
? The Recovery utility allows you to restore the original
contents of the C: drive.
? The Hard Disk Data Delete utility on this disc is used
to delete all data on your hard disk and prevent it from
being reused. Do not use the Hard Disk Data Delete
utility unless you are absolutely certain that you want
to erase your entire hard disk, including all partitions.
BOOT Priority Change
Before restoring an image, you must first verify that your
system is set up to boot from the DVD drive. To verify/
change the boot-up priority (rather than booting-up
from the hard drive or an external floppy disk drive),
perform the following steps:
1. Start your system and press the [F2] key when the
Fujitsu logo appears. You will enter the BIOS Setup
Utility.
2. Using the arrow keys, go to the Boot menu.
3. Arrow down to the Boot Device Priority submenu.
Press [Enter].
4. If "Optical Media Drive" or "CD-ROM Drive" is not
at the top of the list, arrow down to the drive in the
list, and press the space bar (or the + key) to move it
to the top of the list. (The system attempts to boot
from the devices in the order in which they are
listed.). Note that the BIOS for some systems will
indicate "CD-ROM Drive", even when a DVD drive
is connected. Then put in DVD restore disc that came with the computer and follow its instructions.
• This disc can only be used with the system with which it was purchased.

OPERATING SYSTEM NOT FOUND

If your computer cannot access the disk-drive, or if the Operating System on the disk cannot be loaded, then your computer will try to boot from an "alternative" device, namely your CD/DVD drive, assuming that a "bootable" disk (such as Windows 7) has been loaded into the optical drive.

So, first, check that your disk-drive is "detected" and then "working".

What is the cd rom drive letter on a dimension c521

http://www.pcworld.com/product/29434/dell_dimension_c521.html?p=specs

Microsoft Windows XP?

1) Left-click on Start
2) Left-click on My Computer

Look at the drive letters.
Local Disk (C:) is for the Harddrive.

If you have Local Disk (D:) this is for Recovery - Windows files, on the harddrive.

If it states Drive (D:) it is for the optical drive (CD/DVD drive)

If you have Local Disk (D:), then Drive (E:) is for the optical drive.

If there is no drive letter that corresponds with the optical drive;

1) The power cable to the optical drive has become partially unplugged,
AND/OR
2) The data cable has become partially unplugged,
OR
3) The data cable is bad,
OR
4) The power cable isn't giving out any power. (Use a different power cable from the Power Supply, IF available)
OR
5) The optical drive is bad.

[Driver: A small piece of software that allows the Operating System to communicate with a device.

Windows XP Media Edition is the O/S.
The optical drive is the device ]

A) Left-click on Start
B) Right-click on My Computer
C) In the drop down list left-click on - Properties - at the bottom.
D) Left-click on the Hardware tab.
E) Left-click on Device Manager

F) Left-click on the + sign to the left of - DVD/CD-ROM drives.
DVD/CD-ROM drives is NOT listed? Stop. Instructions after this part.

G) Right-click on the name of the optical drive.
H) Left-click on Uninstall

A Microsoft 'squawk box' will come up,
"Warning you are about to uninstall this device"
Click on OK. (It is OK I assure you)

Now close all windows, and go back to your desktop screen.
Restart your computer.
(Start > Turn Off Computer > Restart)

When Windows fully loads again, you should see -
"Found new hardware"
And perhaps "Found XXXX device"
XXXX being the name of the optical drive

No?
Then it is time to go to Dell Support, and download AND install THE driver for your optical drive.
Post back in a Comment for this, and I will guide you step by step.

No Drive Letter for the Optical Drive in My Computer:
You need to check if the power cable has come loose, from the optical drive.
You also need to check if the data cable has come loose, from the optical drive.

No? They are tight?
Then try another power cable from the Power Supply, IF available.
Try using a different data cable if you have access to one.

More than likely the optical drive is bad.
(NO DVD/CD-ROM drives listed in Device Manager)
A CD/DVD drive is a mechanical device. It only has so many hours it can be used.

For additional questions, or to have me clarify anything I have stated above, please post in a Comment.

Difficulty to open cd rom o my pc how to solve?

Repairing your Optical Drive problem isn’t that difficult task.

Unfortunately you have failed to prove the Manufacturer Name and Model Number of your particular specific CD-ROM Optical Drive so I am unaware of what particular specific CD-ROM Optical Drive information to provide.

However if you use Google Search (http://www.google.com) and search the topic Repair CD-ROM you will be able to obtain information on how to disassemble and repair your specific CD-ROM Optical Drive. Examples of a Google Search are provided below ->

http://www.repairfaq.org/sam/cdfaq.htm

http://repair4laptop.org/notebook_op...cd_dvd_mo.html

http://www.repairfaq.org/REPAIR/F_cdfaq9.html

The most difficult part of the repair will be finding the correct size replacement 0-Ring that fits your particular specific CD-ROM Optical Drive. You could try checking with local Computer Repair Shops and see if the have a broken CD/DVD Optical Drive that has the correct size 0-Ring that might work in your particular specific CD-ROM Optical Drive.

On another note now days Optical Drives are inexpensive and you can obtain a replacement CD/DVD Optical Drive for less than 30 bucks.
Hope it helped you. Thanks.

Trying to run recovery disc on computer and cd rom isn't reading

I see this as one of 2 possible failures.
  1. Optical drive failing. Take out the Hard drive, see if the recovery disk, or another bootable disk will boot. If no change, replace the optical drive.
  2. Hard Drive failing. If the system will boot to a CD with the HDD out or if replacing the optical drive has no change, then the HDD is the next logical failure point.

HP CD/DVD optical drive is not recognized

I found that there was a firmware conflict caused by the installation of iTUNES. I uninstalled and cleared the upper and lower filters in the registry and the internal DVD-Rom is recognized. First I cleared the registry and the drive was recognized after a hard boot. So Far no twitches. Knock on wood.
