I cannot scan document from the all-in-one machine. The document has been placed on the glass and nothing happens when I press either start button.

  • riksmith3 Jul 20, 2009

Sorry, Tim. I'm not sure what you are asking. The device is a Canon MP470 Pixmaall-in-one. I have placed the document on the tray and I am trying to scan the document in order to send. I know just enough to be dangerous.

  • riksmith3 Jul 20, 2009

We have been able to scan in the past.

  • riksmith3 Jul 20, 2009

Tim, do you think you will be able to help?

  • riksmith3 Jul 20, 2009

    Still got nothing...:(

  • riksmith3 Jul 20, 2009

Tim, the copy feature works as the document was copied. There was no response with either start button under the scan option.

  • riksmith3 Jul 20, 2009

Thank you for the help. The troubleshooting was excellent. Unfornately, the machine buttons were the issue.

Is it an MP470 Pixma? Did it just stop working out of the blue? Are you trying to scan from the computer or some kind of scan button the device?

Please let me know

No its ok, I just want to make sure you dont have duplicate questions on the site here. So have you been able to scan before in the past? Or is this the first time you are trying it?

  • Tim Grayson
    Tim Grayson Jul 20, 2009

Yes definitely, you will want to start with the basics. Unplug the printer / scanner from the back of your computer, once its unplugged turn off the scanner, now unplug it from the wall. Go ahead and reboot your computer, once its back up go ahead and plug in the power to your scanner. Turn it on if it doesnt turn on by itself. Then go ahead and plug it into the back of the computer.

Give it a good two minutes and then try to scan again. If it still doesnt work then its possible the actual little button has failed, let me know what you come up with.

Ok, when you hit the button on the scanner does it say anything whatsoever on the LCD of the printer / scanner? I think this machine has a COPY button, hit that and see if it copies what is in the scanner tray.

    Let me know

Ok so the button itself has failed then it sounds like, the fact that you can copy indicates that the actual scanner unit is ok, but the scan button no longer works. How old is this unit? It's possible that it's still under warranty from Canon. I don't see a lot of the buttons failing but it does happen. You will want to give Canon a call for repair / replacement. Their number is: 800-828-4040

I am so sorry about that, it's really unfortunate because the system works fine but the button to initiate it doesn't.

If you could rate my answers / help I would really appreciate it. If you don't rate it very helpful / 4 thumbs I don't get any credit on the site here.

Let me know if you have more concerns, but since you restarted the hardware and confirmed scanning works there is really no other alternative.

The best way to scan images to save on yourcomputer is to use the scanner software on the computer. Not the scan functionon the scanner.
You don't say what type of scanner software you have but usually scannersoftware works this way:
1) Place photo on scanner
2) Open scanner software
3) Using the software, Initiate scan
4) Name the Scanned item and save it to your desired location/folder
Note: some applications will automatically save to --My Documents--My Pictures

How do i use my scanner

If you have loaded the software for the printer/scanner.
Go to your HP director Icon and start this program.
you should see your Scanner / printer listed under Select device.

You can place a document/picture in the document feeder on top.
OR you can place the document / picture directly on the glass.
(Lift the hinged lid to reveal the scanner glass)
Don't worry the document feeder uses a different scan wand.
Now document / picture in place select the Scan document or Scan picture icon from the HP director. Depending on which type of document you have placed in / on the scanner.

Scanner should warm up then scan presenting you with a preview image. From here you can decide what and where to go.

You are not limited to just the HP director.
Other applications can use the twain source to activate your scanner software. This will transfer the scan to your application.
Irfanview is a prime example. Image viewer that will let you "Acquire" and image from you scanner. Be sure to select the twain source.

Good luck!
