You can order the shutter assembly from Canon or just the 2 blade assemblies if that is the only problem.

The part number for the entire shutter is CG1-3155-000 and the individual blade assemblies are CF1-2763-000 and CF1-2764-000.

Canon's parts phone number is 1-732-521-7230

Please note that the Elan IIe is a very complicated camera, beyond the capabilities of most do-it-yourselfers. However, you may still want to give it a try!

Hi Marsha,

You have three choices:
1. Send it to me or company for repair
2. Try to fix it yourself
3. Load up my ATG EOS Utility onto your pc

#3 is the cheapest & best way to confirm if the Shutter Button is defective.
-Load up the CD that came with camera.
-Install EOS Utility
-USB Cable connected to camera & pc
-You are will know be shooting "Tethered" with the camera
-Turn on camera
-Double click on EOS Utility

If you need more help, send me an email.

Where is the shutter release button on a Canon AE-1? I am trying to load film in the camera, and the shutter crank "thing" is stuck. do i need to release it with a press of a button???

Did you actually mean shutter release or shutter advance? And to load the film, you need to pull the roll winder upwards. While you pull the winder upwards, it would have a tuck voice and then the back cover would open up. Make sure you have wound the entire roll before you open the back.

My AE1 is malfunctioning. The shutter is being released when I advance instead of allowing me to expose the film with the shutter button.

Hmmm. Sounds like something internal is not engaging as it should. It probably is a plastic gear that has aged a little too long, and some of the teeth are broken off. Yes, this will need a trip to the repair shop. It's probably due for Clean, Lube and Adjust anyway. and many others will repair this camera for you. Luckily, AE-1 was a great seller for Canon, so there are lots of spare parts out there. On Ebay, they are inexpensive and common. Buy one as a backup or parts donor, as they are old enough to start falling apart.

My EOS 300d blank images

That problem is normally associated with having a too high shutter speed when using flash. If it happens in any mode, with or without flash you may have a shutter blind issue.

Test the camera at various shutter speeds and compare the results. If this black area is consistant across different shutter speeds, send it in for repair. It is most likely the shutter curtain not making a pass across the sensor fast enough, still obscuring the sensor when a photo was taken.

Error 99 message keeps popping up

I just read that the error 99 problem is a shutter failure and the shutter will have to be fixed. The cost is about $180.

ERR99 (error 99) is an indication that there is a communication problem in the camera. It is most often an indication that the shutter needs to be replaced, but it can be the result of other problems. All digital cameras occasionally need to have the shutters replaced. In the days of film cameras, it was rare to wear out a shutter because the cost of film and developing limited the number of times the shutter was cycled. With all those ones and zeros being considered "free" in digital cameras, it is not uncommon to take several hundred or more photos in a day. Even with a live-expectancy of 50.000 to 100,000 cycles, the shutters in digital cameras do reach the end of their life and need to be replaced.

Shutter replacement (usually associated with error code "99"):
  • Replacing the shutter on the Digital Rebel series requires more disassembly than most other repairs.
  • The estimate for shutter replacement is $180 on all EOS Digital Rebel models (depending upon the overall condition of the camera).
  • ERR99 error codes are related to shutter or mirror operation and are usually associated with a defective shutter. Cameras that have had heavy use may have shutters that have reached life expectancy and need to be replaced.

Photos are dark halfway across as if something was blocking lens.

Take the lens off and charge the shutter. with the film door open hold the camera toward a light. Fire the shutter and if you see half light in the film window the shutter magnets need replaced. Or the shutter is not being charged enough. If so,camera must be disassembled by a repair shop.
