Yes, thank you, I agree - I have found some very useful tutorials on YouTube that showed me how to take apart the machine, have now taken out the switch and will get a new one to replace. Much appreciation.

You can, but it is dangerous to do so. With the same effort that you would be putting into bypassing the switch, you can replace it for a few bucks. I urge you to reconsider.

Parts are readily available from any appliance parts supply house, or on line. You can also order through Sears on line.

Replace lid switch on kenmoore 23822100

I didn't tell you to do it, but yes it could be done. Remember that this will become very dangerous if kids are around. and should only be done to help drain the washer. The only way to stop the washer is with the timer knob or the pulling the power cord out of the wall!!! Every sears tech has made a bypass switch made up from a broken lid switch.

How to fix a Washing Machine if it doesn't Spin

If the washer seems to complete all of its cycles but doesn’t spin:
1) Be sure the load of clothes is not lopsided. If the tub becomes unbalanced, it may spin erratically or not at all. Open the lid and reposition the clothes. This automatically resets an off-balance shut-off switch. Then, just close the lid and retry.
2) Check the lid switch and the tab on the lid that strikes it. If the plastic tab is broken, the washer may halt during the spin cycle. If the switch doesn’t click when you press and release it, it’s probably broken. If you’re experienced at home repair, you can remove the switch, test it, and replace it if needed; otherwise, call an appliance repairperson.
3) The belt may be loose, worn, or broken. If you’re fairly handy, tighten or replace the belt; otherwise call a repairperson.
4) There may be a problem with the controls; if this is the case, call an appliance repairperson.

How to fix a Washing Machine if it Doesn?t Agitate

If your washer fills with water but doesn’t agitate, the problem is likely to be a faulty lid switch, a broken belt, or a problem with the motor. (Note: Direct-drive washing machines do not have belts.)

1) Check the spin cycle. If this works, the motor is operating and the belt is not broken. If it doesn’t, the belt may be loose or broken. If you’re fairly handy, tighten or replace the belt; otherwise call an appliance repairperson.
2) Check the lid switch and the tab on the lid that strikes it. If the plastic tab is broken, the washer may halt during certain cycles. Press and release the switch. If it doesn’t click each time you do this, it’s probably broken. If you’re experienced at home repair, you can remove the switch, test it, and replace it if needed; otherwise, call an appliance repairperson.
3) There may be a problem with the controls, or the agitator solenoid may be broken. Call a repairperson.

Lid lock broken can I overide?

Washer not starting Cycle:
I would have to slam the washer lid before the washer recognized the lid was shut.
What I did to fix:
1. Ref the link below for Schematics
http://blog.kennyluong.com/Tricking-A-Maytag-Bravos-Washer/
2. Looking at the Lid Lock section of the Schematic:
Place a jumper between pins 2 and 3 of J15
This engages the 1st switch (Lid Lock) so, I don't have to slam the lid anymore
3. Since my Lock switch (2nd switch), which is engaged with a magnetic, is working, my work is done.
If you find that your machine is still not starting the cycle, you will need to
replace the Lid Lock mechanism or ref the above link for temp bypass.

In an effort to bypass the lid switch I pulled off the lid switch off and took the plastic locking mechanizum out of the lid switch. When I tried the washer with it out it wouldn't work. So I put

THe lid switch is a safety switch that is put in to keep the operator from getting an electric shock or ones hand caught in the machine if you leave the lid open and try to run it. If you ran the machine without it in there was electric power in the wires that were connected to the switch. If the power from that circuit hit a ground point, you blew something out! Check for blown fuses in the main panel, or you "fried" the main circuit board..replace it!

Kenmore Top Loading 204329 will fill and agitate but willnot drain or spin unless I put a screwdriver in the area where the plastic thingy on the lid normally goes..what do I need to do to fix this?

The lid switch acts as a safety to prevent injury when the tub is spinning at a high speed. Pressing the switch down with a screwdriver when the lid is open bypasses that safety function. Close the lid (with the machine not running) and listen to hear if the switch is clicking when the plastic rod contacts it. If it does not click then the rod is not pushing it down far enough. Adjust the lever on the switch by bending it up slightly until the plastic makes contact. If the plastic rod is broken or missing, replace it.

My washer won't drain

I just had the same problem and it was the lid switch. I disconnected it so to bypass the switch and now it works. A friend at work also had the same problem and called sears out and it was a stocking stuck in the drain hose. you can google a fix my washing machine and it will tell you how to repair it yourself. That is what I did with the lid switch.
