SP2 setting on this camera is the landscape setting. When in automatic the camera is suppose to make the average settings so to take pictures. I can get a normal picture on manual settings but there are times i want to take quick pictures without bracketing. I have updated the camera to version 1.04 of the firmware and tried turning off the facial recignation settings and still giving me black pictures. I also have a 12MP olympus camera and it has no problems taking auto pictures in the bright sun of the same pictures i took with the S1000FD -

I have the same problem as you my s1000fd takes black pictures in the bright sun, have you found a solution for this problem yet?

if not did you by any chance travel with your camera, because mine went to italy and was put through about 30 x-ray scanners before going into museums and art galleries

Can yo upress menu on your camera. you might have it set to portrait or anything else. try setting the mode for sp2 to landscape, and then it will work (or beach).
remember Menu--> then press ok

Hi whenever i try to take photos in the sun like on the beach they come out really dark please help

Please check the light settings and change from high sensitivity to even a manal mode or a bright sunlight setting.
It is possible that the incident light is too powerful and so changes the auto light sensor to give a correction to the CCD so as to make it less brighter.
You can also try and use filters that can reduce the glare but give a better picture contrast.
If not use the manual mode, correct the speed and aperture.

Pictures takeh are too bright

A stuck shutter is another common failure mode for digital cameras. The symptoms of a stuck or "sticky" shutter are very similar to CCD image sensor failure. The camera may take black pictures (for shutter stuck closed), or the pictures may be very bright and overexposed, especially when taken outdoors (for shutter stuck open).

To confirm a stuck shutter, put the camera in any mode other than "Auto", and turn the flash OFF (you don't want to blind yourself for the next step). Next look down the lens and take a picture. You should see a tiny flicker in the center of the lens as the shutter opens and closes. If no movement is seen, then you likely have a stuck shutter. If so, http://camerarepair.blogspot.com/2009/05/simple-fix-for-stuck-shutter.html for further info and a simple fix that may help.

Note that your camera will not be able to take 15 second exposures, as per the above "fix". Instead, place the camera in manual mode, turn off the flash, and take the exposures in a darkened room. This should give you a couple seconds, just enough time to open the battery door while the red and yellow lights are flashing.

My photos of the Pyramids taken last week are all Black or too dark.Photos taken in bright Egyptian sun!!.Shooting modes Auto or N gave the same results!!.

Without actually looking at your pictures, I suspect you should have played around with the exposure compensation setting.

Fail to take outdoor picture

There is a known "bug" in the earlier S1000 models. You would benefit from a firmware upgrade which is available as a download from Fuji's website. The Canadian site is www.fujifilm.ca . Just look for support and firmware downloads. You can find out there which firmware version is in your camera, and the upgrades, with what they correct.

Pictures too bright

This has happened to me also. You mention that you were changing settings. The symptoms sound like your camera is in a special setting other than "Auto". Examples that would produce such results include Fireworks or Manual. Recommend trying to change your settings one more time:

1. Turn the camera on, and press the FUNC/SET button.
2. Press left or right on your circular dial switch until "Auto" is selected.
3. Press the FUNC/SET button one more time to set the camera to Automatic.

Now take a picture to see if this fixed it.
