Question about GPS

1 Answer

I have two magella 4040's I was using themin a semi with them stuck to the windshield the solder joint on the charging port is weak, The 1st one had a 180 degree jack , straight out, the second one they must of known it was an issue because this one they used a jack with a 90 degree elbow, but in time this one also, came loose. I was wondering what the charge would be each to send these in and have the joints re soldered, I did it once but it did not hold up over a month, Or another thought is to install a new jack or port and i can adapt the charging cord. I don't care about the physical looks as they are worthless as they are now, I will pay postage and handling and can even furnish a return shipping label prepaid

Re soldering the port is ok if the port it self is not damaged..they have A centering pin on the bottom and once they come loose for what ever reason, They shear that pin off, then theres Not much to keep them from moving again Because that pin on the originals Always break off. I also use a little hot glue To keep help keep it put Just As a precaution. The ones I sell, I haven't had any returned yet neither the ones I fixed or The ones the people put the port on themselves, I have however had to guys wanting me to fix there 4040 because they ripped the tracers off the board. (now there junk) I cant repair anything that has the tracers damaged, If I get one like that, I do not even try to fix it, because its beyond My capabilities. To answer your question I do sell the ports for 14.99 on ebay 12.99 off ebay shipping included And yes I do repair them but not if the tracers are damaged. I normally charge 45.00 to repair them and I pay the ship back but if you want me to do both of them And your going to pay shipping both ways. Ill do both for 80.00 I'm not trying to talk you out of anything but if you can solder half decent, I'm sure these would hold up for you, the hardest part is removing the old port without damaging the tracers

When I plug the 12 volt charger in the lighter the green light goes on. When I plug the Maestro 4040 into the charger the green light goes off and the unit won't power up. I checked the power port and I am...

hey mousehunter, you say you have continuity, did you mean voltage..looking at your 4040 with the back off and screen face down (you probably know this already..sorry if you do) the power port should be on the lower left corner...open it back up and the contact at the top left is a ground as is the lower left corner, the lower right is a ground and the top right is the poss.....this is very common for these ports to fail

Does it look like the port has been replaced, or do you know if it was...normally this happens because of excessive heat from trying to solder a new port on it.

1st i would try a home charger to rule out the charger. (you can check if its working by going in the power options and looking at the power meter and see if its moving, assuming you can still turn it on)

if its totally dead, try this...remove the cover again and disconnect the battery, then press and hold the power button for 1 minute....with the battery unplugged, plug in a known good charger and press and hold the power button for up to ten seconds and see if it starts.

let me know what you find.

Chatring port Magellan 4040 not working dc or ac adaoter port defective?

Hi beach2640

The following Magellan 800,860,2000,2200t,2500,(crossover) 3000,3050,3100,3140,4000,4040,4050,5310 and the 6000t are known to have faulty dc connectors...if your Magellan
gps is not charging or will not power up, its most likely the dc power port.

You may also have another issue with the screen but you need to find out why its not charging 1st.

You can get it repaired
here
Or buy the port here

Let me know if you need further help!

Magellan maesto 5310 stopped working. Screen says "Magella".

reset the unit. using a paper clip and insert it in the reset switch located on the bottom of the gps.

after you reset it, it should work, but go HERE and get the latest update for it and follow the directions carefully.

that should take care of your problem.

Loose part at the power input point.

it comes apart take out the 4 screws in the back. you'll need something to pry the back off .start on the side with something thin to unsnap the 2 halfs then use your fingers. after openning you'll need to resolder the powerport back on with a soldering iron and new solder. 4 spots hold the powerport on. it will be stronger than before. mine worked fine after.

Fixable at home?

This problem is a design flaw on all Magellan Maestro GPS from the 3100 series to the 4xxx series.  This problem can easily be fixed, but you need to be handy with a soldering iron.
NEEDED: 1. Fine tip soldering iron, solder, soldring flux or paste.

1. Remove the four screws on the back of the unit holding the back cover to the GPS 2. Pry open but be very careful, make sure the SD card slot is empty 3. Open from the SD card slot side and then remove the cover slowly, remove the speaker cable 4. Use soldering paste or soldering flux, apply some to the leads of the yellow female DC port on the PC board 5. Heat the soldering iron to temp, and then press the solding iron against the leads of the yellow dc port and also apply some solder. 6. Do this to all four terminals of the dc port 7. Now plug in the dc power jack into the port and make sure the unit is charging...  8. Replace cover, make sure the audio and power jack is in the slot first, then close the cover and screw in the 4 screws.
DONE!
Hope this helps
