I want to install XP Pro on a sata drive

I cant install the OS because it says there is no drive. Also I get a beep error when I install 2 gigs of memory on top of the 1 that is already in the machine. The beep error is that of a video error but the vid card is functioning. I have disabled to promise controller and still nothing.

Also, if the SATA drive you have is a newer one, you might have to set the jumpers on the back to 1.5gbps mode or els the VIA SATA controller wont pick it up. If it gives you an error like "no hardware found, check hardware and press g to continue." thats your problem. Also if you dont have a floppy, you can slipsteam the files onto the disc.

heres how to do that.

You need to post what Brand/Model of motherboard you are using, or search for yourself on the manufacturers website for the SATA drivers. Then you need to load the SATA drivers onto a floppy disk so that you may press F6 during the beginning of Windows Setup to load the SATA drivers, as Windows XP Setup does not come with SATA drivers.

There is a glitch on those AV7 boards ata controler I think. Check the website for the new drivers supposedly they help, but all they did was crash my raid after I installed them. I ended up cloning the whole raid over to a single large sata drive and put in an ide to sata card (non raid unfortunately) and the problem went away. I only had the problem under very heavy disk loading. It seemed to not be quite so bad when I added some additional cooling aimed at the motherboard. As to if it will help your software problem I am unsure. However the only time mine did the mini dump was when I was doing heavy video editing work and after nixing the raid it fixed it, But then again a bad drive in a raid can cause that also.

Having major problems installing windows XP

Your motherboard has a bad on board hardware. Its hard to fix that eventhough you disable the function on it. Its better to buy a new motherboard.

Windows XP does not have built in SATA drivers. You will need to download the XP drivers from Western Digital's website and install before the computer will allow you to format and use your new drive. Hope this helps.

Bios Beeps during reboot

According to the information at:

http://www.pchell.com/hardware/beepcodes.shtml

AMI beep codes of 1 long and 3 short are, in fact, correctly identified as memory errors. One thing to note is if this memory is Dual Channel, you can only install the memory in groups of two. You must first fill DIMM slot 1 and 3 before filling DIMM slots 2 and 4.

The below website has much more information about your particular motherboard and there's a note about some JEDEC setting for memory that you might want to watch out for or disable to see if it improves stability.

http://www.msicomputer.com/product/p_spec.asp?model=K9A2_CF-F_V2&class=mb

As for Windows XP 32-bit not recognizing more than 3.5 (at most) memory, this is unavoidable. To see all 8 GB, you would need a 64-bit version of Windows. This is something that cannot be altered by BIOS or memory choices, unfortunately. Feel lucky in the fact that you have XP Pro as XP Home will only recognize up to 2.5GB. You'll never utilize all 8GB unless you upgrade your OS, so keep that in mind!

CANT GET WINDOWS XP PRO TO COPY FILES TO A GX280

The problem is the driver for the sata hard drive. You would need to get that from the dell site and put it on a floppy disk, then at the start of the windows install select to install that driver. I ended up just installing the rc version of windows 7 and it worked out fine.

ASUS P5LD2 Raid 5 locks windows at MUP.SYS

A stab in the dark. Sound like the MB BIOS expects and is written to have the OS on the  IDE  slot. After that I would add one SATA drive at a time to see if it matters and to see if one of the drives are causing the problem.
