Question about Jenn-Air JED8430 Electric Cooktop

Jenn air electric cooktop

I think my cooktop shorted out last night. There was a popping sound and a bright red flash came out from under the burner. I reset the fuse box and the same thing happened. There is rubber burning smell.

Re: jenn air electric cooktop

First, disable power to cooktop. next, replace either the mangled burner or the entire unit (after initial inspection leads to a logical prognosis)...sorry.

The left side of my cooktop shorted out. Initially popping sound and electrical burning smell. Now shorted out with loud popping sounds and large flash of red under the cooktop. Did not start a fire but...

What you had was a slow short - practically the same thing as in a welder: big and loud flame, localized and the amperage isn't that great. As such it's very possible that the breaker wasn't tripped, especially if you had a big one, over 30Amps.
No, you shouldn't even try to repair it, that unit is dead as a dodo.

Gas Jenn Air Cooktop Issue with Electric Starter

Did you spill water near/on knobs? if so leave to dry out for 24 hours. If still clicking after 24 hours one of the switches has shorted out and needs to be replaced. You can find which one with a multi meter/condinuity test. Hope this helps...Good Luck

Tripping breaker

Replace the burner and receptacle and you should be short free. You may also need to replace the surface element switch too if it doesn't come on at all or stays on high regardless off knob setting.

Knob not working and some burners not heating

The switch under that knob is bad.  It's called an infinite switch.  As far as the elements go, first thing to check is for proper voltage (220) to the cooktop.  Let me know what you find.
