thanks i have bought and installed a bigger power unit which appears to have fixed the problem. do you know if 1gb of 400 ddr ram is better tham 2 x 1gb of 333 ddr ram. I have been told maximum ram for this motherboard is 1gb of 400 ddr.

First of all, if your FSB is set to 200mhz, the system will not support DDR400. "CPU at FSB 200MHz mode, it will NOT support DDR400". The FSB will have to be either 333 or 400mhz in order to utilize DDR400. Only 1GB of DDR400 is supported. As to your rebooting issue, could be because of these incompatibilities and/or you did not properly seat the heatsink/fan on the new CPU, which also means you might not have properly applied thermal compound or might have no applied it at all. All the compatibility information for this motherboard can be found at: http://www.asrock.com/mb/overview.asp?Model=K7S8XE

The problem would not be the PS unit. However, you might need to manually increase the voltage to the CPU in order to get it to run at the speed you want. Also, make sure the CPU is supposed to/capable of runing at the speed you want. If so, also check to see what the recommended voltages are for the CPU and set the voltages accordingly in the BIOS. A little more juice should solve the issue. Just be careful and read before changing things, as too much voltage can ruin the CPU.

2x 1GB of 333 is going to be better than 1GB of 400. The difference in speed between 333 and 400 is not even noticable. However, the difference between 1GB of RAM and 2GB, is huge.

You can upgrade the memory to maximium of 2gb of ram 1gb stick of ram in each slot. The memory you will need DDR PC 3200 184 pin.

You can also upgrade the hard drive for more space or buy an external drive to store files.

Whats the biggest and or best cpu i can put into this motherboard. i curently have an amd athlon xp 2800. i just bought some more ram and wold like to know if i can speed up the cpu.

Here is a list of supported CPUs.

http://www.ruby-electronics.com/store_item/MSI_Athlon_XP_Duron_nForce2_Motherboard_K7N2_Delta_MS-6570-020

If you're going to upgrade to the XP3000+ (the fastest supported CPU), then be sure to get the one with the 200 MHz FSB.

Also, go with the lowest supported latency DDR PC3200 you can get IN PAIRS. Remember that Windows XP 32 bit only allows a total memory allocation of 4 GB which must include your video car memory and any memory allocation for add-on cards.

So 6 512MB sticks of DDR PC3200 are better than 2 2GB sticks of DDR PC3200. As the 6 sticks will allow for dual channel transfers (above and beyond the Double Data Rate) and will keep you well within your 4GB limit (once you add the video memory and any add-on cards).

You'll also benefit from doing a fresh install of XP with nlite or similar and stripping XP of all of the components you don't use. Good LUCK!

According to SiS® official document, SiS® 748 chipset has limitation DDR supports:
CPU at FSB 200MHz mode, it will NOT support DDR400
CPU at FSB 333MHz mode, it will NOT support DDR200
CPU at FSB 400MHz mode, it will NOT support DDR200/DDR266

Depends on chipset http://www.asrock.com/mb/overview.asp?Model=K7S8XE

How to get my CPU to run at the correct speed

Your FSB should be 400 MHz for the Athlon XP 3200+ processor.
CPU-Z shows your core speed at 1320 and your FSB at 241. If you multiply those numbers by 1.66, you get 2200 and 400. So all you have to do is get the board to the correct FSB speed of 400 and your core will be right.
There are two MSI boards with the number CPU-Z gives you. Board 1
Board two

The AMD page doesn't show the core voltage for the older processors, they do for the current ones. I looked at the MSI site and didn't see their manuals online for the motherboards either, sorry. I'm not positive it was changed using a jumper though, you saw nothing in the BIOS to set it? If the jumpers are on the board they may be labeled FSB and you can try the various positions.

Hope that helps, good luck.

Upgrade

Hello,

Thank you for the information. Please find the CPUs supported by the Motherboard of your computer below.

Duron: 1.6 - 1.8 GHz at FSB 266 MHz
Athlon XP:
Palomi** Core: 1500+ - 2100+ at FSB 266 MHz
Thoroughbred Core: 1700+ - 2700+ at FSB 266/333 MHz
Barton Core: 2500+ - 3200+ at FSB 333 MHz
2500+ - 3200+ at FSB 400 MHz

Sempron: 3000 + and up
I see that the present processor is requires ** upgrade as it is one of the best match availble for this motherboard. However, you can upgrade the Memory to 2 GB using two 1GB
DDR 266/333/400 modules to improve the system perform performance. Also, you can consider for a video card upgrade. Your computer supports both AGP and PCI video cards.

Also, you can download the maunal for the motherboard of your computer from the link below for your referance.
