The Sony battery that came with the camera no longer works

After the battery was depleted, I charged it and now I get a "Use compatible battery only" error when I turn on the camera.

I had the same problem and tried cleaning the contact points with alcohol on cotton swabs and it didn't work so I tried using a clean pencil eraser and after cleaning both the battery contact points and the 3 contact points within the camera using a twisting motion, it works!

It means the camera has detected that the battery is not genuine or not compatible. sony batteries has the data chip that provides the 'info' in infolithium.

check with the vendor who sold you the battery.

The main batter will not hold its charge when left in the camera.

After 12 months use camera batteries will not hold a true charge, but they can still be used for clocks, or remotes. Buy new ones. We all have the same problem.

Battery compatibility

There's not much you can do about the problem because the problem is inside the camera. A faulty component is probably the cause. (I think its receiving more or less that the needed amount of power so that's the error with compatibility)
If still within warranty, take it back to the reseller and ask them for a replacement or get it fixed. If they refuse, ring up SONY.

Flashing lights

This sounds similar to a problem I had. I brought the camera in under warranty and the repair shop fixed it. They shop text is cryptic.
Problem: Camera light keeps flashing, not charge
Solution: Troubleshoot to intermittent switch block control, replace with new one, test OK.

SONY DIGITAL HANDYCAM DCR-TRV340 PROBLEMS AS NOT CHARGING

Do you have any issues when operating the camera using the AC? If not, then the battery is most definitely your culprit. Batteries have a limited life span and they do tend to have a shorter lifespan as the years go by. If you can try depleting them and seeing if then they recharge, it's worth a shot. Otherwise a simple battery replacement is in order.

Also, try and use another battery and see if it charges. If it doesn't, then it just may be the charger. I'd also check Sony's website to see if there's a firmware update for your camera. Download and install it.
