Not for the machine. It may however be dangerous to do so.

This will sound VERY dumb..... I've got a job in the morn., to help my buddy chip brush(he rented a chipper), not sure what size.. I haven't ran a chipper in apx 18-20yrs. So I don't look like a jackwad,...

Ok so it really does depend on what size. Some have ram feeders. Some have pinch rollers that feed material in. Ok so you know what end first? Like any machine you want to start it first. Same procedure as any gas machine. Turn ignition on. If it's pull start, gas on , choke on and pull. Turn choke off, throttle up. IF it's electric, hit the start button. If it's a small unit (home version not diesel ) then when you pull the cord it won't pull very fast as you have quite a flywheel you must get turning. Be patient and it will start. IF it's real small unit, you'll have to push the branches in. If it says it will grind a 3" branch, the remember that's a straight 3" branch. Have a lopper handy to remove stubborn branches that won't go in the chute. Hope he got a self feeding one, much easier.

I have a craftsman chipper / shredder and it doesn't do a very good job - is there a piece to change or a blade to sharpen?

The blade(s) should have usually two bolts on them depending how many blades you have. Mine only has one blade held on with two bolts and that is only on the side that cuts the larger branches up to two inches in diameter and should be sharpened on a grinding wheel because it has a specific angle to it. The other side that chips smaller branches and twigs it a type of flailer, meaning pieces of metal just swinging around to mash up the sticks and do not need sharpening.

Wood Chipper how to

Great input tina783. I have just one thing to add. Try to shred the branches within a reasonable amount of time. I found out that with my shredder, if I put older, dried up branches in, it tends to take a lot more time, as well as tosses chips back out at you. With newly cut branches, this wasn't nearly as much as an issue.
