not a usb. it is a ps/2. i have tried another keyboard with same results.

the details of my issue are:

windows can be opened in safe mode. mouse works. i can copy/paste text. when attempting to enter from keyboard, it freezes. mouse freezes.

in safe mode with networking, i can logon as administrator but am not prompted for password. the machine was set up with a password originally. i copy/paste text "msconfig" to try and diagnose problem but machine alerts me that i do not have rights and will allow me to do anything.

i was running mcafee on it but it popped up stating an error had occurred and would not scan. i was successful in downloading avg free and was able to run scan in safe mode. two virus were found and removed but did not improve the machine.

cannot run windows from reinstall disc. when machine gets to point where it prompts "hit any key to run from cd" it freezes if i don't hit a key. if i hit a key, it takes me to another menu that offers to run from cd, repair, or quit. at this point the keyboard stops responding.

it will not let me install drivers.

when in command mode, on the "c" prompt it does list an administrator with a series of numbers that end with .000. keyboard is not frozen at this point, but any dos commands that i try are not recognized.

i read of a manual method to clear passwords. does it work so that i can try a repair?

    thanks

Hi,
try the following steps:-
1.If it's a USB keyboard, try a different USB port or try a PS2 keyboard.
2.If it's a PS2 keyboard, check the pins on the plug. Unplug it and plug it back in.
3.Try booting up without the mouse plugged in.
4.Try a different keyboard.
5.If you have VPN or dial up software that has a custom GINA, try uninstalling it under safe mode.

its a common windows problem. there is a multitude of options to solve this. try start windows in safe mode and start a program. if that works go a restore point back. or reinstall windows. or get a newer version of windows. windows 7 or 8 are likely to perform better than windows xp - assuming it is windows xp you run. avoid vista like the plague

Toshiba satellite L675 freezes after startup. Windows &

Boot the computer into "Safe Mode".

To boot PC into Safe Mode follow these steps:

1. Turn the computer on or Restart the computer
2. Start tapping the F8 key. The Windows Advanced Boot Options Menu appears. If you begin tapping the F8 key too soon, some computers display a "keyboard error" message. To resolve this, restart the computer and try again.
3. Ensure that the Safe mode option is selected, not Repair Your Computer
4. Press Enter. The computer then begins to start in Safe mode.
5. When you are finished with troubleshooting, close all programs and restart the computer as you normally would

If the computer boots into Safe Mode you can try disabling Startup Programs, one of these might be causing your computer to freeze. To do this follow these steps:

1 Press Start. Type msconfig into the search bar and press Enter. For XP, click on Run and type msconfig there.

My computer is slow and freezes all the time and also occasionally blue screen comes up

If you are getting different problems at different times, they you have to start handling things slowly to exactly pin point the issue. It will be great if you can also document the error messages, when you get it, the windows version you are using etc so we can provide you more accurate steps and identify the exact issue.

First if you are using windows XP restart the computer in safe mode and try using it (if you wanted to use internet - wired) then restart the computer in safe mode networking.

Procedure to restart computer in safe mode:
Restart computer, keep tapping F8 key on the keyboard, instead of going to windows it will show up a windows advanced boot menu, where you need to use your up or down arrow key to navigate the control to Safe mode / safe mode with networking and hit enter key. this will show some commands / text on your screen and take you to safe mode.

Try using your computer in safe mode and see if your computer is giving you any error or if it freezes. If it does not give you any trouble in this mode then you computer is good, it should be the additional programs running in the normal mode that is creating the issue. we need to diagnose further to find it.

If it is freezing / gives your error message in safe mode itself, then there should be a problem with the hardware of your computer, we have to find out by eliminating the hardware one by one.

Do not worry, we can work together pin point the issue and we will help you to resolve this issue.

Can't access laptop computer in safe mode, keyboard freeze up

Try booting your system from a LIVE cd like linux, a verson of Hiren's tools, or the UBCD (ultimate boot disc for windows). If your keyboard still freezes with the alternate OS, you may have a hardware malfunction.

How can I unlock the keyboard and mouse on a acer aspire 300

Try starting the computer in safe mode by pressing the F8 key repeatedly on boot. The start up menu will appear. Chosse safe mode and run an antivirus and antispyware program in safe mode. Your system is freezing and that is why your keyboard is not working. You should find that the keyboard and mouse will work properly while you are in safe mode. I suspect that something is stealing your available resources when you start in regular mode.
