The cleaning blade in the toner catridge is worn out. You need to replace the cartridge.

I have a laserjet 4m plus and the print is ok but the page has a grey shadow on it. Any solution? Michael D Neal

This is a sign of a worn or faulty toner drum or a dirty fuser roller.
Clean the fuser roller, switch the laser off and let it cool down first and clean the fuser roller with a cloth with a some white spirit.
If the fuser roller is clean the the toner cartridge needs to be replaced (it contains the photo drum).

Has paper jam message all the time, clear it and it works for one or 2 pages and then jams again appears to have problem picking up the paper

Hello,
What happens to these older printers is all of the rubber rollers for the paper handling dry up and basically do not function correctly.

You can purchase a rubber roller rebuild kit that comes with complete instructions from HP.
It's really very easy to do.

Good Luck!

That sounds like a problem with your printer driver to me. If the wrong driver is used, then print codes that the other device uses will not be interpreted correctly by your Laserjet 4M Plus, which will cause it to beep. Check the driver on your computer to make sure that you are using one designed for any of the following:

HP Laserjet 4
HP Laserjet 4+
HP Laserjet 4M
HP Laserjet 4M Plus

(Either the symbol "+" or the word "Plus" may be used but most commonly the + is the non-Postscript version and the word is used with the Postscript version. Just as an FYI, the only two differences between the M and non-M versions are the ability to speak Appletalk and the addition of the Postscript module, which is in one of the RAM expansion slots.)

Laserjet 4m has light black streaks across entire page.

Did this just start up after replacing the toner cart? If so try another toner and if not replace the toner and see if that helps.

Good Luck

The lcd screen on our HP Laserjet 4 printer is barely readable. Is there something inside the printer that we can replace? We cannot locate a manual for this printer. Other than that, it is a virtual...

My first thought is probably what you've already considered as well...the LCD display is old and the functional elements are wearing out. My second thought was that it would probably be cheaper to replace than to repair. Nevertheless, I can try to address your question with a couple of ideas.

There are actually quite a number of "HP Laserjet 4" printers including the Laserjet 4, 4m, 4plus, 4m plus, and so on. Here's the list:

Product Search Results

Here's the webpage for the actual Laserjet 4:

Laserjet 4 Page

You should find a link to the manual for this product on that page. You can also ask a question directly on the HP support forums:

HP Laserjet Support Forums

Those options should give you your best bet on replacing the LCD if the option is reasonable or possible. Good luck.

Error 13-jam paper HP Laser 4+

HP LaserJet 4, 4m, 4 Plus and 4m Plus Series Printers - False Error Message 13 PAPER JAM ISSUE: After clearing all jammed paper from the HP LaserJet 4, 4m, 4 Plus, or 4m Plus series printer, the display still reads 13 Paper Jam . Even after cycling the power off and then back on, the error remains. SOLUTION: Open the rear door of the printer. There is a paper sensor near the upper right hand corner of the fusing assembly (just below the right edge of the long yellow warning sticker on the fuser) that can cause paper jam error messages even when there is no jammed paper in the printer. Toggle the thin black plastic lever up and down to make sure it is not stuck or sticky. The lever should be in the down position before closing the back of the printer. If the lever is stuck or missing, the printer will generate a false paper jam message. Hope it will help you !
