Hi Vivian,

Chweck you cables and where they are conencted.

You will need to make sure that the Comcast modem is providing internet, you can do this by connecting your laptop to it using ethernet directly if it connects to the internet, that will be a good thing.

From your comcast Modem, the ethernet Cable should go to the linksys where it says "WAN". this should give you an internet connection and make your comcast modem communicate with your linksys Router.

Won't connect online

This just happened to my siste and a frind of mine recently. It can be a few things.

Are you connecting via wire from your laptop or wireless? I'm hoping they did not remove a wireless router and not explain this to you.

With a new modem your main IP address would change. First I would try turning off everything, unplug the modem and any connected switches or routers. Wait at least 10 minutes, better yet, unplug them and go to work, go shopping etc.. Then plug the modem back in, wait 2-5 minutes, plug in any routers and switches, wait 1 minute then turn the laptop back on. See if that solves the problem.

I have a Zonet Router that I am hooking up to Comcast DSL internet. i show that i am connected but i can not get online. i duplicated the MAC address i just dont know what else can be wrong. is there a...

The first thing is that Comcast is Not a DSL connection it is Cable connection. Now first make sure that your computer will be able to go on line when connected directly to the modem. Connect your main computer directly to the comcast modem and check if that goes on line. If not then you will need to contact Comcast and get main computer on line. If it is online then reset your router for 30 seconds. release the reset and wait for 1 minute. Now connect the main computer to the router and comcast modem to the router. open the set up page and Clone the MAC address of the " Main " computer.
power cycle the modem and the router. See if it works.

I have recently moved from Pittsburgh, PA to Charleston, SC. My linksys Wireless G 2.4 gHz router worked great with the ISP in Pittsburg (Comcast). Now, with Time Warner's Road Runner, I get an error and I...

Connect your main cmoputer directly to the time warner modem. make sure that your computer will be able to go on line when connected directly to the modem. If not then call Time warner.
If your computer is able to go on line when connected to the modem then your modem is working properly. You will need to change the settings of the router.
First reset the router for 30 seconds. On the router you will find a small reset button. Hold it down for 30 seconds. release it. wait for 1 minute. now unplug the power to the router and plug it back in. wait for 30 seconds till the power light on the router will be solid.
Now connect the modem and the computer to the router.
Now you will need to clone the MAC address of your main computer to the router. you will neeed to open the set up page of the router.
once your main computer is online , you can change the wireless settings of the router and connect to the wireless network on the laptop.

Main pc will not connect to internet, but laptop does

hello dpl55,

First, open IE or the webrowser you use: go to Tools in the File Menu - go to the bottom and select Internet Options, and click the Security Tab. At the bottom, be sure the "custom" button has not been selected (the default button will be greyed) it the default button clickable, click the default button. Also, to File in the File menu in IE and make sure that "work offline' isn't checked. If so uncheck it.

Next, (if still not working); Go to the Control Panel and uninstall any programs and driver for the router, that were installed when purchased. Once complete, restart the computer. Once OS is up and idle, insert the setup disc that came with your router (make sure router is unplugged from computer (unless otherwise directed); the setup will tel you when to hook the router to the computer. Once the installation is complete, and you have hooked up the router as directed, open IE and see if you have internet. NOTE: if you have wireless interent through Comcast, and your laptop has built in WiFi, you should be able to detect and connect to that without using the router with the laptop.

You may need to call Comcast for further assitance if these instructions do not deem succesful, and in such and event, my advanced apologies. These are steps and procedures I have used, and been succesful with numerous times.

Thank you for choosing Let me know ifI can be of any further assistance.

A router is basically a mini-computer that splits up one internet connections to 4 (or whatever # of ports you have).

Basic Connections to a router:
A Router requires a internet connections, so your broadband modem must connect to the WAN port (theres only one) of the router DIRECTLY. Then Ethernet cables go from the router to the computers on the LAN ports. Don't do something weird like connecting your internet to your computer then your computer to the routers WAN port, it'll most likely mess up.

Once you have connected your router like this, it should work.

If your modem only has a usb port, I have no idea how to make that work out. Sorry. Try getting a new modem from your ISP, or check if your modem does have a ethernet port, if it does just connnect that to the routers wan port.

Also computers should not interconnect with each other with use of a router. Thats what the router is for. Everything gets connected and split up at the router, nothing connects to anything else but the router, basically.

Loss of internet connection when going through router

Your laptop seems to be hooked to your neighbours unsecured network automatically and it is going online with that. About comcast, when you connect a router to the modem or a computer to the modem, the modem has to be rebooted to give a valid IP to the connected device. If the modem is not rebooted the computer or the router will get 192.168.x.x IP address which is called private IP address.

Can't connect to the Internet via router

Well, this is a very generalized problem that others have, so i'll give you some starting tips. If you can connect when you plug your computer directly into the modem, then it sounds like your modem is bonding to your computer. There are a couple ways to fix this. The easiest is to ask your router to clone your MAC addess (not to be confused with a mac computer, a MAC address is a 10 digit code that uniquely identifies your computer on a network). See the attached image to find where it should be. c26d492.jpg
Once you set it to clone your machines mac address, unplug the computer from the modem, and plug in the router. If this doesn't fix it, please comment back and we'll try some other things. If it does, then give a good rating :-)
