Question about Frigidaire FRT21P5A Top Freezer Refrigerator

2 Answers

Frigidaire freezer cold, refrig in 50's.

I had the refrigerator defrost timer replaced. The fridge worked good. My wife thought it was getting warm last week. I adjusted the temperature settings and the fridge went to 30 degrees. I have been out of town and she tells me that the fridge has warmed up to 50 degrees (we have a thermometer). My guess is the vent is not open enough. Where is it? Can she fix it? she has a lot of food in both he fridge and freezer.

If the defrost heater/thermostat isn't working correctly, wouldn't there be ice in the freezer? Since you had the defrost time replaced and the machine worked fine for three months and there is no ice, isn't another problem more likely?

Because the model FRT21P5A has a manual adjusting vent I believe your problem is either the defrost heater and defrost thermostat and or the cold control (thermostst) is not working correctly. When temperatures rise in the refrigerator side first that is a sign that the air flow from the freezer is restricted. You will need to unplug the refrigerator and remove the rear panel in back of freezer to confirm. If Iced over use a hair dryer to defrost and disconnect one wire on the defrost heater. Check the defrost heater with an ohm meter. You should get a reading. If defective and no reading you need to replace the defrost heater and defrost thermostat. Let me know what you find, Thanks Sea Breeze

Yes pull the refrigerator away from wall and feel top of the compressor. Is it too hot to touch? Are bot fans running. Straight wire the thermostat to see if it is causing this. The start relay and start capacitor may be the reason. Let me know by email you response because Fixya has not been notifying me of any ones response to my solutions. I just found you made a response. Sea Breeze

Temperature gauge or thermostat? If a thump gets it going then the electronics are a problem, get a new control board. If your thumping the thermostat it could be the defrost timer behind there, the timer motors get weak and won't go out of defrost, the thump gives it the umphh to move. Check with your local appliance parts supplier they can supply you with the proper replacement and they can show you a diagram to determine whether you need a control board or defrost timer.

Refrigerator warm freezer too cold

If you have already adjusted the controls for temperatures in both compartments and allowed 12 - 24 hours to stabilize and the trend is continuing, there may be a problem with the fans that move the cold air from the freezer to the fresh food compartment. The fridge may also start allowing temperatures to rise in the freezer soon, too.

All of these problems originate in the freezer compartment, where the cooling is done. Behind the back wall; inside the freezer - lies the cooling coils, defrost heater, circulating fan(s) and defrost terminator sensor. Unplug the fridge. Empty the contents of the freezer, remove the ice maker assembly and the back wall plate and you should see these components. If it looks like a large block of snow and ice, the problem is with the defrost circuit components. If clear with a minimal amount of frost, the warm fridge is the result of blocked or limited airflow from this area to the fresh food compartment - likely a failed circulating fan. Plug the fridge back in and check to see if the fan is running - since the fridge is warm, it should be running. The fan or the thermostat will probably need replacing if it is not.

If icing or frost is the problem, you'll need to isolate and replace one or more of the following: defrost heater, defrost terminator or defrost timer. The last two are the usual suspects for this type of failure - but the heating element can fail too. Many times, the defrost timer is accessible from the front of the fridge, behind the kick plate below the freezer door on the right side. Other times it is located in or near the temperature control area.

Good luck!

Hi!!

You may have the temp. set TOO HIGH for the freezer, set it in #2, leave the fridge setting in the mid range for now. Check after 24hrs. and adjust as necessary.

Good Luck!!
