Black screen - no flashing white cursor in the upper left corner - no picture at all, i.e. the initial Dell start-up screen doesn't show up either:
- LCD is dead or isn't getting a signal - not an easy fix; or
- the LCD isn't being sent a signal - holding down the function [Fn] key and press display Function key to toggle through its settings (LCD panel only, Rear VGA output only, both LCD and VGA output)
Black screen - flashing white cursor in the upper left corner - the screen goes black after the windows loading screens come up but before the windows login screen comes up - it is probably a windows video driver problem. Try starting in Windows Safe Mode with VGA. Press [F8] after the Dell startup screen disappears to access the windows startup menu

If you shine a flashlight on your black screen and look real hard for the icons on the desktop. If you can faintly see them that means your LCD Inverter is bad. You'll have to disassemble the LCD Screen to get to it. In the mean time you can attach another monitor (LCD Flat Screen or the Old style fat CRT) with a VGA cable to the vga port on you laptop. Once you have it connected hit the FN (Function Key) + (F1 thru F12) key that that corresponds to the external display. Hold the FN Key while you hit the Function Key that is for the external display. The key might have the words LCD/CRT on it or it might show a display symbol. That's the key you want to hit while holding down the FN key. This will cause the desktop to display on the external monitor and verify that there is no problem with your Video Card inside the laptop.
This sounds more like a hardware issue. Now you say that the external display output is working fine. It could possibly be a problem with the lcd display itself shorting out. If there was a problem with the video hardware then I do not think you would be able to get the external display working either. The whinning noise could be coming from the lcd inverter.
yes you can fix this problem go in to start menu then control panel then double click display, then screen resulution and add the secondary screen, bc windows doesn't add the screen automaticlly you have to do it this way
