There is a slider on the left hand side of an SD card which sets the card to Locked (lower position) or Unlocked (higher position - i.e. towards the top of the SD card). The first step is to check the position of this slider.

Note that the position of the slider does not affect the SD card in any way - it trips a switch inside the camera (or other SD reader). The slider MUST be in the upper position or the camera will say Card Locked - so if the slider has fallen off (they are very fragile!) the camera will assume it is in the Locked position.

The SD card has a little switch on the left side (Lock/Unlock) that provides write protection for the card. The switch is in the Locked position and the camera can't write to the card. Remove the card and move the switch to the unlocked position (towards the contacts on the end you insert into the camera). Then replace the card carefully so that you do not change the position of that switch.

If that doesn't work, try another SD card.

I hope this helps.

When i remove the sd card to upload photos to my computer my new pictures are not there but are when the sd card is in the camera?

There are two possibilities that I can think of. 1) The SD card is full. You will need to copy the pictures off the SD card and onto your computer, then format the card. You can probably do this in the camera, but MAKE SURE you have copied the pictures you want to your computer because the format will erase everything. 2) The SD card is write protected. Look closely at the SD card there is a little slide switch that "locks" the SD card so that your camera cannot put any pictures on it. This slide switch must be in the unlocked position (or NOT locked).
Hope this helps.

I have a powershot SD 790 IS.When i turn the camera on i get the message Card locked. How do i get it unlocked & can my pictures still be recovered? Thank-You Maurita reit_24@yahoo.ca

Take the card out of the camera, on the left hand side, you should see a small notch you can slide to lock and unlock. Slide to the unlock position.

If its already in the unlock position, re-insert it and check the camera - card setup menu, you may have picture protection enabled..

Once accessed you will see which pictures have survived, the only problem I can fore see is that you tried to take pictures while the card was locked, in this case, none will survive.

If you think there are files which may have been deleted, you could download and install "recuva" from "filehippo.com" then try to recover deleted files, but be sure to recover said files to a new destination ie a folder on your PC. If you recover back to your card, you will overwrite the very same files your trying to recover.

My memory card is write protected. when i turn on camera the screen is saying it is write protected, i can't take pictures or delete pictures

Hi. Thanks for your question.

SOLUTION 1 - Unlock the memory card.

There is a Lock switch on the left side of the SD card. Make sure the Lock switch is slid up (unlock position). You will not be able to modify or delete the contents on the memory card if it is locked.

NOTE: If you are using a microSD/microSDHC card or a miniSD/miniSDHC card, insert the card into the standard SD adapter.

SOLUTION 2 - Toggle the lock switch.

If the lock switch is not on lock:
1. Slide the switch up and down. Repeat this 3 times.
2. Let it stay on the Lock position for 30 seconds.
3. Slide the switch up to unlock the card.
4. Try to transfer files into the device.

My Canon Powershot A560 memory card is locked and it is the camera doing it not the memory stick. When I turn on my camera I get an error message"memory card error" then when i press to view pictures it...

1

Turn the Canon Powershot A560 over so the bottom is facing up.
2

Locate the door on the bottom of the camera. The door is labeled "CARD/BATT. OPEN."

3

Place your thumb on the slider on the door. Push the slider up to unlock the door. Then, slide the door out to open it.
4

Find the SD card. Inside you will see four batteries and the tip of a small plastic disc. This plastic disc is the SD card.
5

Eject the sd digital memory card. To eject the card, gently push on it and then release the pressure. The SD card will pop out part way. Go ahead and pull out the card.
6

Turn the card so the writing is right-side up. On either the left or right side of the card, you will see a grove with a tiny plastic switch in it. If the switch is at the bottom of the groove, the SD card is locked.
7

Unlock the SD card. Using a fingernail, slide the switch to the top of the groove. The card is now unlocked.
8

Return the SD card to the camera. Place the card in the slot and push down until you hear a click. The card is now successfully reinstalled. Do not worry about inserting the card the wrong way, because it will only fit one way.

SD card locked for Samsung SL202

Hi,

This used to happen occassionaly with my canon camers. Just use a peice of scotch tape or if you have one a small dab of hot glue to stop it from sliding.

Hope this helps FixYa,
