Question about Heating & Cooling

2 Answers

We have a Lennox model GCS16-1353-270-7y. It has not been working right all summer. I have a manual for it. We called a serviceman 3 weeks ago. Have not seen him yet. We are remote Montana and do not have many chooses. The unit has a economizer on it. I blocked the dampers open on the ecomomizer to try to make the unit operate better, and opted to wait for the tech as it was lowering the temp 10-15 degrees. We do not need much in western Montana. That worked until yesterday when the Outside temp reached 98 degrees and the air conditioner fell flat on its face and was not cooling at all. When the temp in the restaurant reached 90 I shut it off and used fans and swamp coolers. what can I do to try to diagnose the problem with the air conditioner and make it work?

The unit is fairly old. It was install in 1992 when the restaurant was built. It uses r22. We have fairly low humidity(50-60) to low humidity(20-30). I can not find out the accual humidity for July 18 but it was real close two 20 per cent when it was 97degrees. The manual warns about over filling the freon but it does not give me instructions on cleaning the fins. It is not draining any condensation onto the roof. i do not know if the unit was new in 1992 but I can find out. I did find out that the serviceman came and looked at the unit beside the one we are leasing. I have the gages and tools to recharge the unit but have always worked on car. I am bad about needing techical step by step advise before I will dive into a big project, which is what this looks like it will be.

We are low humidity. Air conditioner is a 10 ton unit with gas heat using R22. difference between return duct and air vent is only 5 degrees at best, it is hotter when it is hot.

Cleaning I can do but I would like some advice and direction. When I took the outside filters out of the economizer I could see the outdoor air dampener was closed so I opened them and could see the squirrel cage fan past them. I went to the other side and opened the panel and could see the back side of the 2nd stage evaporator. The arrangement is a little different than my manual. The first stage conderser coil can bee seen from the outside and are very clean. I have not been able to find the pan but have only taken off 2 panels. What parts do I need to clean? All that I am used to cleaning is the condenser coil, on vehicles. Any help I can get I will appreciate.

Well, it sounds like you may just need a good cleaning. Water and rags and maybe a little soap will do wonders on this unit if you haven't cleaned it ever. Also try using a compressor to blow out as much as you can first and then using the rags to clean the fins and such. On hotter days, it should not cool as much but it should still cool so first try cleaning the unit and make sure that it sounds like it is running ok (the compressor should be running along with all fans). Then if it still isn't cooling, then it may need a recharge which is something I would leave to the service man to do on a unit this size. Let me know how this turns out.

Pretty much all of the coils and fans for sure. This is an outdoor unit and so is very weather resistant so cleaning it shouldn't harm it but it also gets a lot of dust built up since it is outside. Pretty much clean everything that you can get to as any dirt prevents the maximum cooling that it can provide to itself and to the restaurant.

I need to know how old it is and do you have extreme humidity there now? if so that can cause it not to coll, so be sure the unit is draining and also unplug unit and flush out the fins on the unit to get rid of any dirt, dust will build up with water and cause the condenser fins the inability to be able to transfer heat so AC will be warm. blocking off the vents to get it cool is another problem which means the door actuators are not functioning this could be caused by several reason including the control arm being frozen up.Since it's in a restaurant you have high humidity try replacing the filter and also look to see if it is R134 refrigerant if it is you can go to a appliance shop and buy a pirceing valve and add R134a into the system in order to get it to cool. you clamp the pericing valve onto the low side of the compressor there is an allen wrench supplied with it, tighten it down then Peirce the tube with the allen wrench then hook up the r134a from the auto parts store with a Gage on it then slightly open the valve and allow some refrigerant to leak out and hook up to the shredder valve then open the valve and open the allen wrench hole so you can allow the refrigerant to go in, watch to see if it starts getting cooler if it does keep adding fluid by shaking can back and forth until it is at max cooling ability and your set. There is a possibility that the thermal bulb is bad and if thats the case your stuck,

Help. Wrong suction line installed on Lennox HS26-060

Call up the company that installed it. They should be responsible for the work even though it has been 7 years. And if they don't want to replace lines then try to offer to buy the new copper if they throw in the labor. Sounds only right to me. If the person that owns the company wants to keep Lennox warranty. I think they offer 10 years on compressor. But do it as soon as you can I am sure the small copper line is wrong size also. Good luck let me know how it goes. ken

My Lennox Air conditioner only heats

It is possible that it's the thermostat. When you turn it into cool mode, does the unit come on at all or is it silent? If nothing is coming on, then it's likely it's the tstat. Did the tech check the refrigerant charge while he was there? He should have checked it with the auxillary heat off and the unit just in heat mode. Make sure that the condenser unit outside is coming on when you are calling for cool, If you turn it on and everything comes on, go outside and put your hand on the large copper pipe coming into the unit. In cool mode, this pipe will be cold to the touch and in heat mode, the pipe will be warm to the touch. There isn't much you can do on your own with the exception of changing the tstat. If you can answer some of the questions I have posed, I can try and give you some more answers. Just remember that a check up doesn't mean its a guarantee that something won't happen the next day, it's just that everything was in working order at the time of the checkup.

Sony KDS-50A2000 screen is in green tint

My Sony KDS 50 A2000 is 17 months old. Its the 50 Inch SXRD projection model. About two weeks ago the screen developed a green tint with cannot be tuned out, then a few days later the message began to appear on the screen that the bulb was nearing the end of its life and must be replaced.
Fortunately I have the Circuit City extended warranty.
I called and within just a few days a serviceman came out and replaced the projection bulb.
The Result: No change in the picture, the green tint remains on all channels, so I'm awating the next service call. Under the service warranty they have the option to repair or replace this set. If indeed this is the light engine (optical block) which I suspect and its going to cost $1,000 or more I may be looking at a new set.
When it works this is a great TV, but I have had three Sonys now including two other standard CRT models and now this one joins them in the junk heap, the other two also bit the dust after just about two years. Is it time to give up on Sony?
I know they have a class action suit on a similar model for this same problem. Caveat emptor
