SOURCE: Unable to clean

you need a new waist ink absorber box and have to do a reset. The absorber box can be purgchased from a service partner (see brother homepage of your country). Same procedure:

Magenta won't print at all on test page. Tried normal cleaning cycle several times to no avail. Also tried "power purge" cleaning cycle twice also with no success. Help!

The magenta print head nozzles maybe blocked.
Inkjet printers need to be used frequently to prevent ink drying out and blocking the print head nozzles.
If the print head cleaning maintenance routine does not clear the blockages, then print head needs replacing, but it may be expensive.
It may be more cost effective to buy a later model and better printer than replace the print head.

Cant print yellow on brother mfc5460cn - have cleaned the machine so many times and replaced the cartridge 3 times.

It may be the printhead (part number LK2179001), and that's expensive and kind of hard to get at. If you were to bring it into our shop I'd quote you somewhere around $200 for parts & labor, and you'd probably tell me to forget it and go buy another machine.
There's still some hope, though. Brother has programmed several kinds of cleaning cycles into the machine, and they don't tell you about the really powerful ones.
First you need to get into Maintenance Mode. Press this sequence:
Menu, Black Start, ^, ^, ^, ^ [That's the up-arrow key four times.]
Ignore all the error beeps while you do the above; they'll slow you down and you'll just end up in the menus somewhere. Touch the Stop button and do it again, faster until you see MAINTENANCE on the display.
Enter the number 76. You don't need to touch the Enter or Start key; as soon as you touch the second digit, you're in the purging section. Then enter 3 to select Power Purge. Repeatedly press either the left- or right-arrow to cycle to CLEANING YELLOW. Press the Black Start button. Go find something to do for a few minutes.
When it's done, enter 99 to exit the Maintenance Mode. The machine will go through its complete startup routine. Print a test page.
Power Purge uses three times the ink as a normal cleaning operation. If you don't see significant improvement in your yellow print after one Power Purge, then you have a bad printhead.

Brother MFC-440CN won't print color

Did you use generic carts?

Do use only original brother ink carts!
Only these have special cleaning fluids mingled with the ink.

There are several advantages, too:

You can run a special cleaning mode (DO insert original carts at first!!!)

Press menue then start bk copy then fourtimes arrow-up.
machine should switch to maintenance mode (buttons will flash).
press 7 then 6 then 4 then start bk copy. machine will refresh ink within the tubes and the print head and run a special cleaning routine. when finished press 7 then 6 then 3 then start bk copy to run a power cleaning. leave the maintenance mode by pressing 9 then 9.

The machine should print without proböems. If there is a poor quality left, the printhead is affected by bad ink and cant be fixed anymore.

Yellow color

What you can try is the following procedure:
1# Install new carts and make sure that they are really well placed (the procedure will consume a lot of ink)
2# press menu then start mono (blue copy button) then 4 times arrow up (tel index). Machine will be in maintenance mode.

press 7 then 6 then 4: display will show init_all
press start mono
machine will refill the tubes and the printhead with fresh ink and do some cleaning.
When maintenance is shown again press 0 (zero) then 9 when you are OUTSIDE US/CAN. Machine will print a test print.
If you are from US/CAN you have to leave the maintanence mode by pressing 9 then 9. Press ink etc. to do the test print job.

Do only one cleaning cycle in case you see some of the yellow blocks.
In case you still have trouble with seeing any yellow, the yellow ink channel or the print head is rotten and cant be fixed anymore.

Printer head cleaning

Sometimes a cart doesnt work well because of mal manufacturing. Put in another brandnew black cart and do the cleaning cycle again. Its an advantage to use genuine brother carts! If you dont have any success try this: press menu then start/mono (b/w) then four times arrow up. maintenance should be displayed and the printer beeps. press arrow up til 7 is displayed. press enter. press arrow up til 6 in display. press enter. Display: Cleaning_All. press arrow up til 3 then enter: power_p all. Press start mono. machine starts power cleaning. After maintenance is displayed press arrow up til 0 (zero) then enter then 9 then enter. machine prints print quality sheet. In case there are only a few blocks in black repeat the above procedure. If you doesnt see neither any blocks in bk nor text after the second try be sure that your printhead is clogged and cant be cleaned anymore. This happens due to thirdparty ink which has pigmented ink instead of dye ink. Use only dye ink for brother printers!!!

Not printing too well

Do use genuine brother ink for testing: If you're lucky the filter in front of the nozzles (which is part of the printhead) is not clogged. Do the power cleaning twice: power up. push menu then start mono then four times arrow up. machine will display maintenance. push arrow up several times til 7 is displayed then Enter then arrow up til 6 is displayed. Push Enter. push arrow up til 3 then Enter: P cleaning_all Push start/mono. After machine has finished maintenance will be displayed. push arrow up til 0 (zero) then enter then puh arrow up til 9. machine will print a test sheet. Repeat procedure above if no good result. After three times without success the printhead is clogged due to wrong ink. ...and do use dye-ink only for brother printers (pigmented ink will clog the filter!)
