We are getting an error message that the top cover is open. We have turned the machine on and off, taken the folding plates in and out. What else can we try?
Locate the top cover switch that is apparent stuck in the open position. Fix or bypass it.

You have to closely examine for the presence of a nub or switch part that gets moved when the door is fully closed. Look for it.
So you have no idea where it is? I have looked it over before I even wrote the first comment for help. I have event looked at the parts manual and it says nothing about a over switch location.
