To the original poster, the officer could have used laser, vascar, or pacing to issue a speeding ticket. The officer also could have used a very quick burst of instant-on radar which Cobra brand radar detectors are notorious for not detecting. The officer also could have used a 35.5 Ka band radar gun. Cobra and other import brands of radar detectors usually have great difficulty detecting 35.5 Ka band radar.
You can buy one of those toy radar detectors or find one of those signs that tell you how fast you are going. They are usually around school zones and they flash your speed. Your detector should beep when you turn it on to tell you everything is OK too.
Sound like the speaker blew, which can be fixed. Although it can be tough to find a small enough speaker to mount inside the unit. You can mount a small external speaker on the bottom of the unit and wire it inside the detecter, you will have to take the unit apart and disconnect the existing speaker. This is a common problem and I have fixed several by mounting an external speaker on the unit.
