Question about Refrigerators

Leaks on the floor

Also caught the fridge leaking from the switch that tells the light to turn off. Really! Right from the freezer through the switchy thing. I got it for free and it's birthday is 3/88. I suppose it's time for a new one. However if there is an easy fix I'd rather let it live on in infamey.

It may need new water line. You might be able to rig a newer one to fit it. Try Lowes or home Depot. they might be able to order one. Also check the water filter, if you don't keep them replaced they will start to leak.

Have whirlpool gold refrigerator with freezer on top. Water leaking continuously out bottom on floor. I turned water valve behind to off. All leaking stopped. Can someone tell me where to look for the...

Hi,

One big question before you go hunting. Before you turn off the water, was the water running all the time? Meaning if the water had a continuos flow the leak is before the fridge. If the leak is erratic then its on the valve side to fridge.
Follow the water source in the fridge, supply line to water valve (bottom right behind the fridge), from there it should run straight up the back into the freezer. So, if the water is coming from the valve, replace it, if from the water line - replace it. If the water line came off or out of the freezer reconnect and check for a frozen fill tube.
I hope this information helps.

Our freezer leaks water on the floor. Looks like

I had the same problem, and the solution is that the drain valve was plugged. On my unit, I removed the lower back panel and started cleaning. It was filthy, and I don't think it had been cleaned for 8 years or so. Anyway, there is a drain hose that releases into a flat pan. The pan is really long and weaves its way through the all the other components under the fridge. It is designed to increase surface area and allow the defrosted water to evaporate. Anyway, the drain hose into that pan was plugged. I just removed it from the point of connection to the drain and blew into it (from upstream) and that dislodged the dirt plugging it up. My system allowed relatively easy access, but I would guess some designs might be pretty tricky. Also, make sure you have some towels standing by because when you remove the drain hose, all the backed up water will come streaming out. This was a surprisingly easy job, and only took about 30 minutes total. The main work was vacuuming all the dirt. The lesson learned is that this should be done every few months. Also, a lot of the insulation around the components had pretty much disintegrated, so that was more clean up, and I imagine there might be some issues now with efficiency and maybe hot or uneven spots in the fridge itself.

Thaw out the defrost drain in the freezer. It has frozen over and the defrost water has nowhere else to go except on your floor.

Your defrost drain line must be cleaned.
