I just had this problem with both my external drives (I was using the same power cable and just alternating between them). I went and got drive B's power cable and they work fine now. Try replacing the power cable

Thanks aud10chick! It is indeed a power cable problem. I replaced the power cable and now my drive is working just fine. So if your hard drive flashes alternatively between red and blue (basically a red flash) then replace your power cable..

Mine did the same, but I think it's due to something that occurred in a Windows update.
My drive will come on eventually after several days and I've now seemed to have solved the solution.
Windows has a message saying the USB failed and I found previously I didn't have to eject the external disc by clicking on the task bar to remove the hardware.
Since I've now done this eject before shutting off the external drive and/or my pc, when I start back up, I'll still receive the message about not reading the USB but after about 10 minutes it will detect the external drive. Really annoying, but it still works.

Trekstor external hard drive (DSMNU-S-JM-a) is on (blue light) but the device no longer shows up on the computer. Can't be accessed.

try other usb port, or other computer and see whether the hdd is detected. If still not, try to go to device manager ( http://www.computerhope.com/issues/ch000833.htm ), and then assign a drive letter to the hdd. After that, try to access it from Computer, if not able to access it, format it (use quick format) and then use this file recovery program called asoftech data recovery to recover your files.

I dropped my TrekStor DataStation maxi g.u - 3.5"

Hello

You need to understand that a hard drive is very similar to glass, if you drop it, its done for, and it breaks.

contact a data recovery service if you had something of importance in the drive, you will not be able to recover anything out from it yourself if you really dropped it.

they break, they can break even if the case falls over on it self on the table.

let me know if you have any other questions.

Thanks.

Mechanical damage. Last possibility to retrieve the data on it: open the case, extract the hard disk, put it in a desktop and try to access it in there. If even this fails then it's dead, junk it.

If it still has a valid warranty, exercise the warranty to get a free replacement.

Otherwise, open the enclosure, and separate the disk-drive from the USB-to-disk-drive adapter, and connect the disk-drive as a 'slave' disk-drive in a desktop computer, to see if the adapter was the problem.

At the least, the device is "unreliable", and it would be wise to replace it, either by exercising the warranty (if the warranty still is valid), or by opening the enclosure, removing the disk-drive, buying a new (and compatible) disk-drive, inserting the new disk-drive, and closing-up the enclosure, to create a "new" external storage-device.

Blinking light in blue

Could be, the product is actually just defective, right out of the box.

An item's compatibility may be limited, too; in that maybe you should
try running your OSX's Disk Utility on that external drive, and if need
be, reformat it to a more compatible Mac extended format. I'd never
take a new 'compatible' hard disk drive at face value, as being so...!

Disk Utility can do several things on a drive; low-level reformat where
it writes zeros over the contents, repair a drive, repair permissions
when an OSX volume is on the drive (as in a backup clone) & etc.

If you can get it erased, reformatted, etc, and it still won't work, check
with the supplier or retailer on getting a replacement under warranty.

Best of luck!

Drive cannt be detected by laptop

Ok what this sounds like to me is that the partitioning table or MBR have been corrupted and it only recognizes part of the partition. I would suggest downloading the ultimate boot cd, at www.ultimatebootcd.com. Burn it to a CD and boot to the CD . Try partedmagic and i think the app inside parted is Testdisk, if i remember correctly, alot of time it can recover data pretty effectively with that failure.

Let me know if this helps.

Datastation m.u stopped working : (

Hi,

Dropping a drive can be catastophic but usually isn't.

I suspect you may get lucky and find out it's just some of the circuitry in the trekstor shell that is damaged.

Take the Trekstor unit to your nearest PC shop and ask the technicians there to remove the Hard Drive and put it in a new enclosure to test it. If it works in the new enclosure, buy the enclosure and your done. If it doesn't work in the new enclosure then you may be suffering from worse issues that will require the help of a pro.

Either way let me know how you make out, if you need a pro for the next step, reply back with you location(Country, State, City) and I will refer you to the closest facility who can assist you.

Hope this Helps FixYa,

Chris
