Question about Flotec 1 - 1/2 Sprinkler Pump Composite Quick Priming High - Capacity 115/230v

1 Answer

Flotec pump takes long time to pressure up. Has worked fine for ~15 years + but noticed the last month or so it runs and runs even after water use is shut off. It's like it's half the pump it use to be. We had a hard freeze last winter and it was the first time (in 15 years) I did not drain all water out of pump for winter. Could this have damaged an impeller or something internally? The casing is all plastic/composite. Can parts still be ordered? I could not come up with a hit on Google when I put in the model number.

PROBLEM SOLVED! I looked into this more closely a few weeks ago and discovered the pressure switch had a very small leak. Hardly noticable and very little water on pump house floor.

I took the switch off motor and discovered the diaphram pot metal had warped, allowing water (& pressure) to seep out. I removed the 4 screws that held the whole thing together. The diaphram itself was fine.

With a ball peen hammer, I was able to straighten the pot metal, apply a little liquid gasket and bolt the switch back together. That took a little mojo as the spring in the switch is very strong. I had to tie the 'inside' parts together with a fine wire so I could re-attach the diaphram and pot metal to the outside of the switch plate.

Put things back and now pump runs normally. After water is turned off, the pump will pressure up the tank and shut off in about a minute. Before the fix the pump would take forever to shut off.

This could be a problem it the pump caused by freezing, check your drain plugs first to see if their cracked or loosened. They will quite often be made if a softer nylon that will crack first and drain pump in the fation of many fail safes. A place to try on-line for parts that may help is "Optimus Home" But I would check the plugs first.

If in the past your system can build-up pressure up to 40 psi even if the supply valve is open and water is being used in your house, then your pump impeller maybe already worn out that's why its pumping capacity was reduced.

To replace the switch, shut off power, remove wires noting all wire locations.
You may have to relieve pressure in the system by using water until the surge tank is empty.
I'm not sure about that.
You do have to either remove the switch from the piping by unscrewing it or remove the piping from the switch by removing the connector and unscrewing the connector from the switch.
Assembly is the reverse. You should use teflon tape of dope on the screw connection below the switch.
The procedure should take about a half hour but you won't have any water during this time.

If the pump is only pumping for a few seconds at a time it may be a problem with the control board. On two of mine, the 10mf 100v smd capacitor came loose. Resoldered and potted with hot melt glue. One of them is working with the other yet to be tested. Don't recall what the exact symptoms were, only that it wasn't continuously pumping water while submerged.
Unit is oil filled so should be dismantled in the upright position.

I got 1 year old flotec 3/4 hp pump and it take

I have had the same problem there are a few things that can cause it to take longer to shut off, if you are running a sand point well that's usually a sign that the sand point is clogging up,if you have a sistern or a dug well check the screen on the end of the suction pipe, another possible cause is the water level has dropped low enough the pump is having to work harder to pull the water up, you should also check your pressure tank and the points for the pump if the points are sticking the pump will keep running till it builds enough pressure to trip them.Check for leaks in the suction line, if it is sucking air that would cause it to run longer to.I hope these suggestions will help fix the problem. If heating up, the motor thermal switch is opening to shut down the motor; this is by design. During the brief run time does it pump at all? It sounds as if there may be mechanical issues on the pump itself and the motor (from the extra draw) is heating up and shutting down. I'd look in to the pump to see if anything had failed within it.
I hope this may have helped,
Tom

Flotec Sump Pump Tethered Float - Float seems faulty. Easy fix?

it sounds like it could be a bad float switch but most of the time the water isn't high enough for the pump to turn on. it takes alot of water to turn on a tethered float. the other pumps they sell at lowes with a real float (like the one in the toilet) are adjustable and also replicable. .

if the pump is working correctly, it can either be, need more water to prime it, or something in the well, such as low water, plugged filter, etc....sometimes when you have a system that is intermittently used, it can take 20 or 30 minutes of continuous priming to get it to pull, enough water to maintain the prime.

Flotec Shallow Well Jet Pump won't pump water

The tank is an air tank, it works like a cushon and accumulator.

Have you reconnceted the pump? If not fill the pipe that goes to the well with water. It should not drain down, there should be a foot valve that prevents the water from running back into the well. So if the foot valve is working it should not take a lot of water to do this.

Pour water into the suction side of the pump until the pump is as full as you can get it, reconnect the pump and start it up. Yes it does need to be primed

Good luck
