Re: How do I get on Netgear with a laptop?

The network key is set on the access point or router. You can check what it is (or set it) with a wired connection to the access point or router.

Configuring Netgear Wireless Routers/Access Points

What do you need to know about configuring routers?
All basic router configuration are almost the same. You can access the router by a specific address. In this case, for NETGEAR router, the default address is

You can access the router configuration page by typing on the address bar of any browsers.
It will then ask for the User name and Password. The
Default UserName is : admin
Default Password : password

Most of the people just want to configure their wireless network and what is the wireless key.
You can check the wireless setting of the router. You will then see the wireless network name or the SSID. You can definitely change that to the wireless network key that you wish to use.
You can also change the wireless key which is your wireless security. There are several types of wireless security. We have WEP, WPA-PSK, WPA-PSK2.

Usually, WEP and WPA wireless encryption are used. For WEP, you can use 10 digits numbers from 0-9 and for WPA-PSK, you can use alpha numeric characters.

It's up to you what to use. You can easily change the wireless key by entering it on the Key1 under the Security Encryption. Just hit apply and you can now use the new wireless network name and key that you just setup..

One tip of advise, don't be afraid to change the settings of the router. Just remember the current settings if you are not that familiar before changing anything. If that doesn't work, just revert the changes. I'm sure, you'll get comfortable on configuring any router in a short time..

Happy configuring.. :)

I forgot my WEP key for my ps3

Some later model wireless routers have the Password(ie.Encryption key) and the SSID already configured in the wireless router andthis information is printed on a label on the bottom of the router.
These settings can be used to configure the wireless card and wireless adaptersin your computer/laptop.
If these settings do not suit you, then it can be changed to suit yourrequirements.
The encryption key secures your data and wireless connection from unauthorizedaccess. To configure the wireless settings in the router, connect a LAN cablefrom your computer to the wireless router, then open a Browser on your computerand enter the router's configuration IP address, then enter the admin login andpassword and then go to the wireless settings and configure the SSID andEncryption key.
The router's encryption key can be a Passphrase or the WEP or WPA or WPA2key.If you use the Passphrase method select either WEP or WPA or WPA2 togenerate the encryption key. You can enter the WEP or WPA or WPA2 key with 8 to63 ASCII characters or 64 Hex digits.
Most people use Passphrase which is easier to remember eg. I was born inJanuary 1988.
The strongest and latest security is WPA2, the weakest and oldest is WEP. To connect to your wireless router from the computer/laptop,configure the wireless card in your computer/laptop with the router's wirelesssettings ie SSID, plus the WPA or WPA2 encryption key. Then computer/laptopscan communicate with your wireless router.

What's the difference between WEP and WPA? What should I pick?

WEP is a weak securtiy protocol that is outdated and can be easily broken

WPA is a newer security protocol that is much harder to break with AES encryption

WPA is always recommended mode for operation over WEP.

Use WPA2 which is latest version if it is supported by device.

This is the same key that you use to connect your laptop to wlan.

if it is an office network, you will need to ask the network administrator or someone using the wlan for the key.

My netgear wireless router has been installed and we can see the wireless connection on our laptops but when it asks us for a password we don't know it-is it the Lan ip or wan ip or is it another password...

I think its asking for the wireless encryption key (WEP) which you will see somewhere on the router itself or you might have to open the router page and check the wireless network settings check for WEP - Password

I am trying to connect my laptop to wireless internet, but it keeps asking for the security key. What is it?

an access key is configured in the wireless routers web console to allow only the users with the key to connect to it. sometimes referred to as a "WEP KEY" or "WPA key" or "authentication code" To login to your web console, join your computer to your wireless router with a network cable (yellow below) to an Ethernet port 1,2,3 or 4 ef8efd2.jpg open your browser and surf to (instead of www) or (most common) you should presented with a login screen most common username and password is admin and admin a482702.jpgonce you have logged in look for your wireless security setup screen such as this.....5be26fc.jpg
look for the Wireless and Security Screens to enter or check your access security code, enter a code or review the existing one. Then once you save your changes you can connect with your laptop, now that you know the security key.6679972.jpg

Can not print through my printer

Your printer has to be a network printer first of all. You cannot print through access to the computer it is hooked up to. If it truly is a network computer then you can get the WEP or WPA key by accessing the router via a computer that can go online. Google the IP address for the model number and make sure you also google the default username and password. If you cannot get into the router because someone set a new user and password then reset the router by pushing the reset button on the router. You can then go into your router and access the passcodes and info in "Wireless Security". It will list your net name and passphrase if using a WPA or a WEP key if using a 128 or 64 bit encoding. Use the highest encrytion you can. If your using XP you will have to use a WEP key (don't argue this you other experts) as XP is not really happy with WPA. Vista, although it sucks is good at networking and can use the higher WPA encryption choices. Vista is based on NT which was built to network well so it can do amazing things when trying to network it is just the rest of the program that sucks. Be Well
