Green light goes on when I turn camera on, but 3 red lights flash when I shoot & nothing happens. I tried changing multiple batteries, all alkaline. No luck yet. Any ideas?

The 3 flashing red lights indicate low battery power! This could be because of low battery power (all 4 batteries must be good), the battery contacts in the camera are poor, the make of battery being used (try different make of battery)

Just a hunch - your camera's in-built capacitor is malfunctioning. You need to send your camera to service.

Sony digital camera problems

Either your camera is shorting the battery or the battery is no longer holding a charge. The easiest solution is to try a different battery. If that doesn't work the problem is with your camera.

Low battery showing replacing batteries does not solve problem

The flashing low battery symbol is the way Canon film cameras showed that the camera has had an error and has stopped functioning. It can have multiple causes - but for a quick check remove the lens, turn off the camera and then turn it back on - see if the symbol stops flashing. A problem with the lens can also cause this problem (usually a failure of the aperture unit)

My wife is complaining that every time she turns off/on the camera she has to reset the data/time. I understand that when the batteries are changed the settings may be lost, but not simply when the camera...

Sounds to me that there may be another battery inside the camera that is going bad.

Issue: Everytime I power on the camera the Date / Time needs to be set.
Solution: Replacing the Date Battery for the PowerShot A480.

Replacing the Date Battery. If the Date/Time menu appears when the camera power is turned on, the date battery charge is low and the date and time settings have been lost. Please purchase a lithium coin battery (CR1220) and replace it as follows.
Please note that the first date battery may appear to expire relatively quickly after you purchase the camera. This is because it is installed in the camera at the point of manufacture, not when you make the purchase. caution.gifBe particularly careful to keep the date batteries out of the reach of children. Seek medical assistance immediately if a child swallows a battery since corrosive battery fluids can damage the stomach or intestinal walls. 1. Confirm that the camera power is turned off.
2. Open up the battery door / cover and remove the AA Batteries.
3. Remove the date/time battery holder.
4. Grasp the battery and slide it in the direction of the arrow.
a480backupbatt.jpg 5. Insert a new battery with the (+) side facing up.
6. Replace the battery holder and battery cover.
7. When the Date/Time menu appears set the date and time.
note.gif After purchasing the camera and turning on the power for the first time, although the Date/Time menu will appear, you do not need to replace the date battery. If you ever dispose of your camera, first remove the date battery for recycling according to the recycling system of your area.

Camera only takes one or two pictures then message tells me to change batteries. Batteries are new and camera turns off.

After surveying the web, I see that this problem has been around for at around 3 years. I use fully charged NiMh batteries and get the “change batteries” message after only a few shots or immediately.
In my case, changing to alkaline 1.5V batteries solves the problem (versus ~1.3V for NiMh or other rechargeables.) Cleaning the contacts (stainless steel) makes no difference.
Interestingly, I can operate the camera in the playback mode and view pictures and movies with no problem. This involves driving the display on the camera back, probably the most power hungry part of the instrument. This suggests the problem is record mode specific.
My guess is that there is a voltage reference problem. References can drift over time, and depending on the initial value, cause problems any time during a camera's life. The reference isn't necessarily needed in playback but is critical for recording should the image sensor voltage be too low.

Low battery?

Cameras belonging to the S Series really do have a battery type option that needs to be set up first before taking any pictures for proper power connection.

Recommended batteries are just:
- Alkaline (Non-rechargeable)
- Nickel-metal Hydride (Rechargeable)

Just set the proper battery type by:
- Pressing MENU/OK button
- Scroll to the right until you are in SETUP 2
- Keep on scrolling down and look for battery type
- Press the right button to pick up on 2 options
like Alkaline and Ni-MH
- Press MENU/OK for changes to be saved
- Keep pressing MENU/OK to get out of the MENU

Once, it's done, camera needs to be turned off for a few seconds
so that settings made will be refreshed with the camera.

As you turn camera on, you're now ready to take many pictures.
ALKALINE (Non-rechargeable) batteries when set to the correct battery type will really take a maximum of 100 pictures.

It really doesn't matter if you'll be using 2500mAh. So long as those are the recommended batteries, those will work.

If it still does not work, call the Manufacturer.
