Either a sheared flywheel key or a stuck valve could cause this.

Why won't my Honda HRX217VLA lawn mower start

Hi Duane:
I'd be thinking that it's possible that the alignment key on the flywheel has sheared. That will throw the timing out and it can't run.
Fix is pretty straightforward.
Disconnect and remove pieces until you have the flywheel exposed. Loosen the nut. Lift on the flywheel and smack down on the nut with a plastic mallett to loosen the flywheel. Then remove the nut and flywheel. Replace the key (get replacement ant any lawnmower or chainsaw service shop)
Put it back together and it should run just fine.
Cheers.

You want an honest answer? You got it for free, if there's no handbook with it or available from B&Q, and I've checked their website, then throw it away and buy a decent one. Its all Chinese stuff.

Lawnmower backfires when trying to start

Remove the recoil cover, remove the flywheel and inspect the shear key, it is likely sheared off or distorted and the timing is now off. Replace the key and it should start right up.

My lt1000 turns over and while turning over backfires. does not start. Started backfiring a couple weeks ago while in operation. would backfire, engine would die, wait a few and started again. finally,...

The engine should be an OHV type. You could try adjusting the valves under the OHV cover. Kinda like the valve lash on cars. When the valves are at rest you can set each one to about .004 with a feeler guage. You can look on youtube for a video one adjusting lawnmower engine valves. Seeing it is easier to understand then reading it.

I hope that this helps you get it fixed.

I have a sanli mulcher lawnmower about 3years old, always ervicedand looked after. last few uses its been gutless. today it was running but stopped. when I went to restart it, it made ratchetting sounds,...

Never heard of a sanli. If the engine is backfiring, indeed it could be out of time. One sure way to check if it is out, is to see if the flywheel key is sheared.

Brand new honda lawnmower starts and runs fine then backfires

There should be 1 or 2 screws on the carb. You will probably have to remove the air breather to get to the screw(s). I've been seeing a lot of these types of questions, new equipment not running properly. Factory settings were not set properly.

When you find the screw(s), screw in a clockwise direction until it stops; DON'T SCREW DOWN TIGHT, JUST UNTIL IT STOPS. Then unscrew counter clockwise 1 1/4 turns. Try starting.

Continue this process, 1/4 turn at a time up to 2 1/2 full turns. If you forget where you are at on the turning process, start over by screwing back down. Then pick up process where you left off.

If you need further assistance, just let me know.

Lawnmower has trouble starting, but runs

Hello. Did you replace the air filter? If not check it and replace it if it is dirty. Finally get a carbeurator cleaner such as seafoam which you add to the fuel at the rate of one ounce per gallon. This will get the inside of your carbeurator cleaned up. Do these things and you should be back in business.
