is the cooling fan cutting in ? run the engine whilst stationary with the hood up , give it a little gas 2000revs and wait for the temp gauge to rise ,the cooling fan should be heard cutting in , and off again once cooled the engine temp down ,this may take 10-15 mins but you have to be sure the fan is cutting in or you may cook the engine
First question is what constitutes "overheating". Since the car has been parked for years, the thermostat could be sticking closed. The cooling system could have air pockets and need to be bled. The water pump may be corroded inside and not pumping enough volume. If the gauge goes above half way, the fans should start up. But half way should be more or less normal, not hot yet. I would look at flow problems first, beginning with removing the thermostat and driving it without one for a few days. Also check and see if there is a process to bleed the cooling system of air.
If you are not getting a signal to your gauge, your car can still run. You just won't know if your car is overheating until it is too late. A bad thermostat won't keep your gauge from working. The temperature sensor that sends the signal to the gauge will keep it from working.
The thermostat helps your car in extreme weather. It helps your engine warm up in extreme cold so your heater will work sooner. And it helps you car cool itself off in extreme hot weather. As your engine water temp rises, the thermostat will open allowing the water in the radiator (that has been cooling) to flow into the engine block. The water that was in the block will go into the radiator to begin cooling.
It sounds like the heater core is plugged, It could possibly be the thermostat or water pump. Have you ever had the cooling system serviced? Maybe flush the system and put in a new thermostat with new anti-freeze.
When the engine is cool, open the plastic(black) drain at the bottom of the radiator. I should mention you'll need a drain pan, but, you knew that...lol. If you can jack the rear of the vehicle up a few inches this will help empty certain areas within the engine. Close the drain plug and fill with cool water, " DO NOT" put the radiator cap back on. Start the engine and turn the climate control inside to hot and "heat". Running the engine watch from out side the level will rise and drop when it drops keep adding water until the thermostat opens, you'll know by the temp of the top radiator hose. Let the ngine run for about 10 minutes, then turn off. Later, when cool again, drop the back end of the vehicle to the ground. Open and drain the radiator entirely. Fill with aproppriate amount of anti freeze, 4 cylinder 4 quarts, six cylinder 6 quarts etc. Run engine till warm again and themostat opens fill with remaining water. And top of the over flow tank. Cap off the radiator and you're done. Keep a close eye on the temp for a day just in case there was an air pocket in therre.
You say it's overheating, more info needed such as: Is the engine temp gauge showing that it's overheating? Is it actually 'boiling over' and losing coolant? If it's running hot, but not losing coolant, check to see it the cooling fan is operating when the engine temp rises. You may have a bad cooling fan switch that is not signaling the fan to go on to lower the engine temp. It could be a stuck (closed) thermostat that is preventing proper circulation of coolant after the car reaches operating temp.
preform a pressurized collant flush , take it to a raidior shop to have it done , they will clean and blow out all blockages that might cause your car to over heat. also check to make sure you dont have air pockets in your anit freeze, if you do you need to bleed the system out after you have it flushed , your car should have a blead valve to let out the axcess air ,if not drive it down the road with the cooaint overflow cap off , not the radiator but you need to flush out the system first , add new anti freeze then bleed out all air pockets, hope this helps
If the coolant is below a certain level, the temperature sensor will not read anything and the temp gauge will not rise. Replace the cap, and check that you have enough coolant in the system. If this does not solve the problem, you will need to test/troubleshoot the coolant temperature sensor.
