If you have the model that I'm familiar with, there is a good probability that the picture tube is starting to fail. If you are comfortable working inside the set where there are potentially dangerous high voltages, try the following:

With the back off, locate the flyback transformer. This will be the part with the large red wire going to the side of the picture tube. On the back of the transformer should be a couple of adjustable knobs or holes. One should be labeled screen the other focus. Try turning the screen control SLIGHTLY clockwise. Then try the set. If the picture remains on, then you have bought yourself some time to locate a replacement. This fix will not last long. If there is little effect, then the tube is likely failing and the set needs to be replaced.

Please post the model number and the results of the above.

Thanks,

Dan

The screen is really dark

Locate the Fn (Function) key on your keyboard. It may be on the bottom left side with dark blue letters. Locate the two "brightness" keys near the top of the keyboard. These will be in the "F" keys, possibly if F6 and F7. They should have little sun pictures or something similar to indicate brightness. Hold down the Fn key while pressing F7, or whichever "F" key your laptop uses to increase brightness. Tap F7 repeatedly until you reach the desired brightness. Fn must be held down as you continue to tap. Hope this helps.

I have the exact think happening on my Samsung LN46A530 and it has just been 2 years since I bought it. There better be a cheap fix for this because a $2,000 product has to last a lot longer than 2 years.

Dell Latituse D600 display goes dark

Hello,

The picture board on your monitor is faulty or bad, since it goes black after few seconds, it means the picture board of your laptop has developed fault.

The best thing for you to do now is to take the laptop to a local repairer within your vicinity to help with the replacement of the picture board because the fault is not something you can fix yourself. in order not to complicate issues.

Take care.

When we start up the computer It boots up to the point where the desktop appears briefly. Then the screen goes blank/dark and nothing else occurs. If shut down it will strat up and get to the desktop...

You may want to try boot into SAFE MODE.
Do this by pressing F8 repeatedly until you are offered boot options by windows.

select SAFE MODE and continue on. Note this may take longer to boot and is normal.
when it goes into windows it will ask you if you want to continue so click yes.

If you have recently installed any programs esp. toolbars then you should use the ad/remove programs to delete them.

Also if you have antivirus AND antispyware now would be an ideal moment to let them go to work.

Now try a reboot.

The disc drive will no longer pop open

This happens from time to time. Could be time for a new disk drive. In the mean time,

Shut down the computer for about five seconds and then turn it back on. Start pressing the key that gets your computer into its BIOS settings.

***To enter the BIOS, press the Esc key when the Toshiba script shows up on the display. You should then get a message to press the F1 key to continue. Press the F1 key and you should be in the BIOS. The Boot sequence is on Page 2 of the Bios settings on many Toshibas. To get to page 2 press the page down key. Make sure you follow the screen prompts because your system may be slightly different.***

That key is different on many brands of computers. It may be displayed which key it is on your screen on boot time; but, that message comes and goes quickly.Once in the BIOS, do not make any changes to settings. Simply attempt to open your CD drive. If it will not open while the BIOS screen is open, you have a hardware problem. If it does open, you have an Operating System problem.

That being said - you can open the disk drive manually by inserting a paper clip or push pin into the hole in the front ot the drive. (see picture below)

Sony warms up - picture slowly becomes dark

You are losing screen voltage or whats called the boast voltage most likely. This is probably being caused by a bad capacitor in the sweep power supply. You will need to get a service manual as well as use an ESR type capacitor meter to find the bad capacitor(s). Good Luck
