Question about Computers & Internet
Hi, working with a Dell Dimension 4700, Windows XP, SP2. It's about 5 years old. I opened and it had likely never been dusted. I cleaned out, but still has same issue. It won't start. When you turn it on it says A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to the computer. It lists some things to check like disk space (there was plenty), BIOS updates, etc. I tried booting in safe mode and it stops when windows loads and says the same thing. I tried booting from the Install CD, it gets all the drivers loaded and as soon as Windows loads that same screen again.
I bought a new hard drive and went to Windows fresh install and the same issue. I have no idea how to proceed. Thanks for any suggestions!

If there are any cards in the slots, take them out. Run the video through on board VGA.
It sounds like something like that could be conflicting.
When you start up, don't have anything plugged in except keyboard, mouse and internet.
Try getting into safe mode at this point.
Now click Start, Run, then type in "sigverify" without quotations.
Then click Advanced, then Look for files that aren't signed.
Browse to C:\Windows\system32\drivers and go OK then Start.
Drivers that are unsigned will appear. Create a folder on the desktop then move these here, just in case. Delete the copies from the Drivers folder, only the unsigned ones.
My money is a card conflicting with the system. Meaning XP doesn't like it.
Hope this helps, comment if you need further assistance.

You have too start with an clean install. Meaning formating your harddrive than install xp or vista it will work fine! What you are tring to do is install on the same installation and that's just not going to work!
