Using 2wire 1800hg Home Portal. Have successfully connected with PC Port Adaptors using the existing telephone line. No problems. Then purchased a laptop w/ Vista installed. 2wire setup CD causes error message: "Error number:0x80040707" "Description: Dll function call crashed: Config2Wire.BrowerCheck" "Setup will now terminate" Cannot find a solution and need help. Vista finds the hardware and asks to install the driver for the 2Wire PC port. Driver is on disk. When installed, said error msg occurs. Is there a work-around?

No practical way to use ethernet cable. Some bandwidth better than none! We're stuck with the telephone line connection or none.

    Thank you

My apologies dear friend. First time on the system and not familiar with rankings. If I understand your comments, basically this IS no solution for this router using Vista. That's helpful. However, I do not know how to change my reply to ready, "helpful". Will you advise?

Listen, you do not need that CD! This is already configured. That cd is for other types of troublesome operating systems that just cannot seem to get is DNS settings right such as windows XP. The cd is for XP only you do not need this with vista.

Thanks

Ethernet not usb would be the work around if your using the usb port please do not your only cutting your own bandwith in half doing that, connect it direct to a ethernet port.

    Thanks

Okay, I think I been kind enough to you and i get such a poor rating if you can advise and adjust i will be greatly in your debt. See these are free questions and you asked for a work around and unfortunitly I have the same confguration as you I have a 2 wire and the usb portion will not work with vista as 2wire has not come up with a plan of action the changed the whole modem around and there are newer modems you can use now that will work with windows vista on the usb port.

Here is another work arounf sir and hopefully you will change the rating buy a router hook the modem to the router then get yourself a USB wirless ethernet card for that router and blam it works!! Since you do not want to use ehternet witch would not hurt the situation and is cheaper then wirless but to each his own right you think there is another work around? Call 2 wire yourself I already did and that is the only work around you got unless you take my other solution witch is FREE!!

Ethernet works wirelss is very slow

Most of the wireless adapters connect at a speed of 54mbps max, while wired lan connection adaptors (LAN adapter/cable) works at max of 100/1000mbps. hence use a cable to connect the PC to make it faster than using wireless.

How to connect to XboxLive via 1800HG 2WIRE+Linksys adaptor?

The easiest way to connect to Xbox Live without using your pc is to buy a
wireless network adapter for your Xbox.

You would then go into the system settings on the Xbox and configure the settings for your wireless network.

2wire Home Portal 1800HW

This 2-Wire Home Portal is a DSL modem. It can be used by itself as a wireless modem. It cannot be hooked up to an existing modem.
Go to this link and download the user manual:

2wire 1800hg-- HomePNA stopped working

What you can do, is take the HPNA adapter from the back of the computer and plug the phone cable portion of it directly to the 1800hg's phone port. Since your 1800hg only has 1 phone port though it will not surf the internet, but this is a suggestion to try to make sure the inside wiring in your house is not bad. If you do this though your computer should say its connected, if it doesnt then it could be a driver issue or the phone cable in the HPNA adapter (try a new one then). If its the driver then try support.2wire.com for the regular usb drivers.

I have have 2wire home portal 1800HG and it has low signal strenth. the techs at SBC have tried to strengthen the signal but it still gives it low strength and if I leave the room it's in I can't get any...

Sounds to me that ur getting what we call an EMI or electro-magnetic interference. These are signals that interferes with ur wireless signal that comes from other objects like ur computer monitor, TV, microwave, and even the statics on the carpet.

Try relocating ur 2wire to another place. Do NOT put ur 2wire in a carpeted floor or on top of the computer monitor or tower. It would be best to place it on top a wooden surface.

Keep me posted about this.

Noisy phone line with 2wire rpoter

if the line is clear, just use a line filter only where you have a phone fitted and nowhere else, that way you can try the different filters if you are using more than you need as it sounds as if one may be faulty. Also check any extension leads you may have or remove and check you phone line again for noise. If there is noise it would normally stop you from connecting to the internet also.
