Try running a test on the SYstem by Shutting the system OFF and while it is off, Press and hold the Fn key and keeping it down, Turn on the System. It will initiate a test on the system Which will ask you to press y if you get colorful bars on the screen. Then it will run a Short-DST test. That is a HDD test and if it fails then you need a new HDD, it gives an error like 014x (X can be a number 2,3,6) , If it clears the test or gives 0146 , just need to reinstall windows.But before you reinstall windows please Reseat your hdd once.

Did you do diagnostic on the Hard drive yet? if you did and error come up that mean your hard drive is shot up.

Your hard disk is disconnected, or not configured correctly in the CMOS. Go to the BIOS and be sure that the computer recognizes the hard disk. If doesnt happens, check the connectors, and if it doesnt fix your problem, you need a new hard drive.

Is there a hard disk installed inside the computer? try reconnecting it.

The motherboard, the hard drive, or the connector could be faulty in this case.

Remember to unplug and remove battery if you open the laptop, the hard drive is in most cases in the bottom under a cover with few screws or in some dells its on the side with few screws and comes out from the side instead from the bottom.

What has probably happened is, your hard drive is probably dead Basically its saying it doesn't see the drive so it can't boot. It could be either the drive or the motherboard.

When the computer cannot "see" the hard drive, it is usally because of dead hard drive and it would need to be replaced. In this case you would see the "primari hard drive not found" and/or "no bootable device found"

You should have your computer checked by a qualified technician.

Check the connection of your hard drive and make sure it's plugged properly On The Motherboard.

Is this a SATA drive? Has it ever operated properly? If worse comes to worse, you'll have to reload windows from scratch.

Hi Kenneth,

If you just bought the laptop, then it is still covered by a warranty. Then all you have to do is contact the seller or directly to dell. This is the fastest and most appropriate way, and usually you will get one-to-one replacement (they will replace your laptop with new one). But, please make sure by contacting Dell.

The first thing to try is removing and reseating the hard drive. Sometimes the drive just looses it's connection with the motherboard, reseating can resolve that.

If that doesn't work, you can get a 2.5 in USB hard drive enclosure, and see if you can read the drive in another system, and recover you files that way.

Most likely though is the hard drive has failed. If this has occurred, then your options are limited. You can contact a data recovery service, but that is expensive. Http://www.ontrack.com or http://www.drivesavers.com are a couple options. You can contact them and get an estimate of the cost if the other options do not work.

Dell latitude c640. comes up with error immediately after ram check displays... "primary hard disk drive 0 not found no boot device available - no bootable devices--strike F1 to retry boot, F2...


Seems to be a problem while detecting the hard disk. Please contact customer service if the laptop is in warranty.

Let me know what happens.
