Filter not keeping debris inside

When I vacumn, it blows the debris out the skimmer about 5 seconds later.
The backwash is clean, i checked the sand, cleaned some debris by hand, does not seem overloaded.

Had a problem like that except mine was blowing sand and debris out. I had a "leg" of the lateral assembly out of place. Unfortunately the only way to check is to empty sand to below lateral assembly to check for broken or raised "legs". My backwash was also clean...hope it helps

Why does the filter basket never seem to catch anything and it never reads to need to be backwashed...but the water is still not clear....what are we doing wrong?

Because of the size of the filter - 18", I would presume this is an above ground pool?

  • Do you have a skimmer?
    • If so, put some leaves, larger organic debris, etc. into the skimmer. They should end up in the basket of the Hair & Lint Pot!
    • That would prove your question to be either working or not.
  • If you don't have a skimmer, then you have a suction port in your pool.
    • Let that suction port suck some larger debris that would stay in the basket. Again, you will prove or disprove, whether debris is getting to your pump basket (Hair & Lint Pot Basket).
How long has your pump & filter been operating?
How long do you let your pump & filter run per day?
  • It should run at least 8 hrs per day.
  • If cloudy, you should run continuously until clear.
How long has your water been turbid/cloudy?
  • Use a clarifier, Natural preferred, like SeaKlear, daily at recommended dosage, until clear
What is the pressure?
Are you saying that it is the same pressure as Day 1, has not climbed at all?
What do you mean: Does not read that backwash is needed?
What in your understanding is: "Time to backwash the filter"?

You should know the "Starting Pressure" of your Sand Filter!
  • When sand is absolutely clean & free of any grime and sticky residue.
    • Just added media, when just installed is the best time to make a note of the starting pressure on a working pressure gauge.
  • When the pressure rises 8-10 lbs. over starting, time to backwash!

When backwashing...sand discharges out backwash hose..

A little sand in backwash is not uncommon. Many packaged sand filter systems use pumps whose flow rates greatly exceed the flow capacity of the filter.(the more horsepower the better, right? - Wrong) If this occurs only during back flush the the pump is too strong or the sand level is above the beginning of the rounded top of tank. The sand level will eventually correct itself.

Why does the material i vacum up come out the return??

If you are vacuuming a lot of debris or algae, you need to vacuum to waste. 1. You'll turn the equipment off, 2. You'll turn the valve to waste, 3. Turn the equipment back on, and 4. Vacuum the pool like you normally would. Only this time, the debris and dirty water goes out your backwash/waste line. You also don't have to backwash and rinse afterward because none of the debris went inside the filter.
Any time you vacuum up just a small amount of debris, you'll vacuum on filter and then backwash (30-60 seconds) and then rinse (about 30 seconds).

I have a Hayward Pro series Model S 180T and my pump is not pulling in the water through the skimmer like it did, therefore I am not getting the circulation in my pool like I had in the past. I checked all...

There are a few things to look at here. First is filter pressure.
Check the pressure guage on the filter . If it is at a normal pressure, you sand is probably fine, but do a 20 minute backwash anyways.

Next, are you out doors? if so, when the last time you serviced your pump. All it takes is a bad shaft seal, some pine needles, or some leaves to completely block the impeller in the pump. The is easy to check, simply remove the wet-end of the pump and look inside.

If its the shaft seal, the pump wouuld be dripping water in between the wet-end and the motor.

Also, make sure all skimmer baskets and/or main drains are clear of debris.

Also, make sure all valves are in the correct position.

If the pressure on the filter is normal, again, i wouldnt think its the filter sand.

After you backwash the filter do you have to put in a powder through the skimmer?

If you're using a sand filter you don't use diatomite like you do on a DE filter. You should 1. Turn pump off. 2. Move valve to backwash. 3. Allow to back-flush till water is clear (check sight glass). 4 Turn pump off again. 5 Move valve to rinse 6. Turn pump on till water is clear again.7 Turn pump off, return valve to filter. 8 Turn pump back on again. No power is added to a sand filter. There are some materials to "clean" your sand perhaps twice a year, follow the manufacturer's directions for this.

Very low pressure when I run filter and when I backwash filter

Ok... First check to make sure the skimmers are clear, the skimmer float valve is open, the valves by the pump are all open and check the pump strainer basket too. If you are able to, take the motor and seal plate off and check for debris in the impeller. Also there should be an o-ring on the diffuser (the cone shaped part that covers the impeller. Make sure it is there and not stretched or damaged.

Check skimmers, pump strainer basket and filter pressure. If filter pressure builds. time to backwash the filter. Also, the impellar on the pump might have debris in it...

No suction from hayward variflow pro series sand filter

Try these tips. I am guessing that one of these is the reason that your pool filter is not working properly. If you try these suggestions and they don't work, let me know and I will trouble shoot with you again.
1. Check skimmer and pump strainer baskets for debris.
2. Check for restrictions in intake and discharge lines.
3. Check for air leak in intake line (indicated by bubbles returning to pool.
4. Backwash your filter.
5. Be sure Vari-Flo valve is set on “Filter” position.

NO SUCTION AFTER VACUUMING POOL

Did you use a trash plate? If not you have something stuck in the pipes and need to use an air compressor and blow from pump with main closed. Debris should shoot out!

Sand filter not catching little debris

Filter is being bypassed at backwash valve, due to poor spider gasket in valve, or there is a broken lateral in bottom of sand filter, causing debris to return to pool..
