Question about Sega Saturn Console

My Sega Saturn is acting weird...

Well what can I say... I got my Sega Saturn off of Ebay recently (about maybe two weeks?) and it worked perfectly fine. I got two games which played perfectly... until I got a game called Virtua Cop. When I tried playing the game, the Sega logo and the "Produced by and/or licensed by Sega enterprises" came up but after that, the screen sort of flashed. At first it seemed the console was restarting itself but the "now loading" screen appeared and I disregarded the flash. As the game started, the music began playing and some guy popped up (This was the demonstration screen) and the console immediately stopped reading the disk. I remember trying the game over and over again (each try got alittle further) but the problem persisted. So I stopped. And guess what happened the next day? The console virtually stopped working all together! I'll explain exactly what happens; I put a disk into the console (Thank god it's not Virtua Cop), I push the On/Off button, and, instead of the game automatically loading, it goes to the cd player screen where it says "Checking disk format". So I checked and the disk wasn't spinning at all! Eventually the "Checking disk format" message disappears, only to let me find that I can't do anything else! I tried different games and audio cds, and I even checked to make sure the cd tray closes correctly to make sure the button on the inside on the console pushes in (The button that tells the system if the tray is closed or not) which it does, however it still didn't help the situation. So if anyone has a solution or something that would be great, but I just might end up buying a new one.

I tried cleaning the laser lens as MNfisherman said, but the console still refuses to work. But then I realized, even if a disk isn't in the tray, it still says "Checking disk format" as if the disk is actually in the console. Now I'm not sure, but I think that Virtua Cop game was 'corrupt' and restarted the console in such a way that the console thinks there is a disk in the tray, even though it does not spin the motor.

Nope nope nope your cd lens is on a position that is unable to read the disc so move it a little further (not with your finger or you will touch the lens) a tooth pick or a plastic piece, leave it in the middle of the rail and you will see the disc spinning, also change your battery on the back left is a small plastic cover inside there is a cr2032 battery just swap for a new one use the same wood tooth pick never use a metal object ok this will solve your problem for sure! that is a common problem with saturns! also when you turn it on leave the disc inside and pass to the control screen then turn off the system and turn it back on twice and will read the disc that is if you don't want to change your battery!

I would recommend looking for a guide on the internet on how to Increase the Laser Lens Voltage by turning the Orange voltage screw clockwise about 35 degrees (it is inside the saturn above the laser assembly) This fixed my similar problem.

Try cleaning the glass laser eye with rubbing alcohol and cotton swab. This should fix the problem

SOURCE: difficulty in setting up sega saturn

Uh... what kind of tv cord are you using? Does it hook up to the cable or is it just the Comp. Video? (Red, white, and yellow plugs) If it hooks up to the cable than the RF unit(a.k.a.-the tv cable) is probably shot; buy a new cable (you can find them on ebay). If it's the other one, it still may be broken, but it's less likely. Just try replacing the TV cable and if that doesn't work, just buy a new system.

This is a common problem with the Sega Saturns, what you need to do is take the top of the Saturn off so you can get under the hub. Then you need to gently pry up on the spindle hub from underneath until it slides up the shaft of the motor. You have to be careful when you pry it up though, because you can damage the motor. A pair of pliers works best, because you can kind of rock the tool from side to side and get it to slide up that way. It doesn't take much to fix the problem so just go slow.

This is pretty common. The games just need a good Q-Tip cleaning, and then the weird clean pencil-eraser rubbing.
Get out a Q-Tip, and rub it inside the game, on the copper part (The part you stick down into the system.). Keep doing this with new Q-Tips if the old ones get soiled with black stuff. After the new Q-Tip comes out white, it should work.
Sometimes, that isn't enough. Use some Windex or any other rubbing alcohol, dip it onto a Q-Tip, and rub it onto the copper part. Then, use a dry Q-Tip to dry it off, and let it sit out of it's case and out of the system for about 20 minutes so that the alcohol dries.
If that doesn't work, use a pencil with a clean pink eraser at the tip. Rub it inside the game, and use a Q-Tip to get all of the eraser shavings out. This breaks the electro-static cling/friction made when the game is being read by the system.
And if none of that works, go on Amazon or Ebay or to the store Slackers and get new video and AC wires for the Genesis. Sometimes that's all it needs!
I really hope this helps!

Hi Maguerite

Am I right in thinking that you are trying to play a game made for the Sega Saturn on a PC? If so, it will only work in a Saturn.

Hope this helps

We just recently acquired a sega saturn..When we power it on, the screen is fine but as we push the start button, the games begin to flash like a strobe light..The color, sound, controllers all work fine,...

Your A/V cable could be really screwed up, or is getting some sort of interference from other cables near by. Try an older or different TV. Also maybe wiggle the A/V connection on the back of the saturn to see if it is a lose port.

the box is a RF switching box
the lead you require is a phono to ariel lead (megadrive, master system or any old computer will do)
or if you get an old video lead and cut of one end and wire a phono plug to it it will also work.
or you try ebay

a basic lead for £2.50
replacments upto £10
both work
