Zeiss has provided the requested serial number production dates. Apparently Zeiss does have a record of serial number production dates.

There are no recorded serial numbers for Zeiss binoculars made in West Germany or those made by Zeiss after the fall of the berlin wall. The newer numbers have been a mystery to collectors and so far no one has attempted to publish a list. I have newer models with lower serial numbers than older models in my collection.

Apparently Zeiss have recorded serial numbers for the West German models. This is wonderful news for us Zeiss collectors as previously all the archives held were numbers until the early 90's for models made at Jena. Hope they didn't give 1912 and 1945. Do they have a list available now or just a year for an individual number?

I have a carl zeiss jena 8x30 serial # 124690 what year is it

You likely have a set built between 1919 and 1930. If you go to this site (
The history of the telescope the binocular ) and scroll down (or search) to areas with Zeiss Binoculars, there are a number of files that have the information on runs. In my case, I looked at the Spreadsheet attached to the Zeiss Binocular Models entry, which , between lines 150 and 168, notes that binocs with the Lena logo were made from 1904 to 1945, and that serial numbers above 1 million began in 1919 and above 1,550,000 began in 1930, putting your pair in there more or less in the middle.

Cheers!

I have Zeiss Jena Dekaris 10x50 ser 1740081 what

The manufacturer was Carl Zeiss AG in Jena, Germany. The serial number indicates a manufacturing date of between 1936 and 1940 (1,700,000 starts in 1936 and 1940 starts with 1,980,000) so your's is likely to be around 1936/1937. Some basic specs can be found here
If you're interested in the company history, have a look on wikipedia or check out the website of the Zeiss Historica Society
Hope that helps

One eye or the other seems slightly out of focus.

Hi, one of your eyepieces has an twisty eye piece, its printed on the outside + & -, probably the right side? If its the right side you close your left eye and focus with your right, then open both & HEY Presto, you've got vision in both! Thanks Mark
