It sounds like you have all the cables connected correctly, so I will assume that's true. If not, let me know.
For recording, I suggest using Windows Movie Maker. It's simple, and has everything you need. And, it comes with Windows. To find it, go to Start -> Search and type in Windows Movie Maker. You may want to create a shortcut for it, but you can just run it from the search window as well.

If it came with the Pinnacle software (Pinnacle Studio), that's what you have to use to move your movies from VHS to your PC.
