If it won’t start right back immediately but have to wait a few minutes, then motor is most likely going bad.

You should get a professional with the testers to check the computer. If this check engine light keeps coming on it could cost you a lot of money to drive it. If the check engine light goes off and on shut it down immediately . I hope you have not ruined something.

It is possible that the computer was still accessing the drive when you unplugged it. Depending on what it was doing this could have corrupted files on the HDD.

Does your "device manager" see the drive at all... either as a drive or USB device?

Remove the drive from the external case it is in and connect directly to your computer - see if the bios recognizes it. If so, the OS will do so also and you can access it. Also means the electronics of the external case are no good. If not recognized in other machine, the hard drive has gone to hard drive heaven and needs to be replaced.
