Problem for Canon PowerShot A720 IS Digital Camera

Won't take a picture when I hold down the button

Recently the camera started taking longer and longer to actual take a picture when you held down the button. But now, it won't take a picture at all when I hold down the button. We've changed the batteries, so that's not the problem. Could something be wrong with the shutter??
