Question about Computers & Internet

Wireless Routers that can be configured with Mac OSX...is it that impossible to find outside the Apple Store? All I see on my install disc for the D-Link DIR-655 are PC executable files. Forums and sales sites appear to agree I bought the best router for the wrong OS. It does plug and play very well. Very well. But I have no option that I am aware of with which I can access the config and make any kind of adjustment. For all I know I am broadcasting my network to the whole world!

You do not have to use the cd.
Shutdown your PC. Unplug the power from the router and the cable modem.
Wait 30 sec. then plug in the power to the cable modem, wait 30 sec. then plug the power to the router. Wait till you have "Internet" light then restart your PC. The PC should pick up an IP address and you should be able to get on-line. This is if you have a cable service provider. If you have DSL, the router needs to be configured with PPPOe.

Then turn the Aiport on and it will see the router. and you can connect to it.
On D-Links you can go to 192.168.0.1

password is admin, There you can set the SSID and Security encryption

How can i get for free the install disc

  • Hi Angel
Apple don't put their OS on DVD any more. It's usually downloaded directly from the internet. But, if you live near an Apple Store you could take a USB Memory Stick in the shop and one of the guys could download the installer to the stick.
You could also try downloading from here www.fenopy.se/?keyword=Mac+OSX+10.5
If your machine can handle it (CPU 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
or better), get the latest OSX 10.9 Maverics.
    It's now available for free.
But you may need to use a friends Mac to download off the internet!
You can also make a bootable USB 32GB memory stick to assist.
    Here www.fenopy.se/?keyword=USB+OSX
See OSX Lion 10 7 3 USB STick Creator
To find out more about your Mac Model and all of its capabilities... download a copy of MacTracker.

These days you really must have an external hard drive of at least 1TB or so to keep copies of your files on. Partition the drive into 2or3 parts and keep one (60GB) as a clean OSX emergency boot.
I always use Carbon Copy Cloner to make a bootable "CLONE" of my PowerBook on my external drive.. That way if you ever get into boot problems you just connect the external boot disk, Restart the Mac, then hold the option key down and choose the external OSX Boot drive that you want to restart from. Then you use the Disk Utility program to fix Permissions & Test your internal Hard Drive.
I make a "CLONE" at least once a year then test that it boots then I wipe (Format) my internal HD and install clean updated OSX. Reboot and choose the Migration Assistant to put all my data back from the Clone I made.
Have been doing this for years now. Keeps the Mac software in prime condition.
    Hope All That Makes Sense
    Cheers

Safari browser

Your version of Safari is out of date.
As you are using a pre-Intel Mac, the highest OS you can run is Leopard (10.5) which whilst is an ugrade of the OS is still way behind the current version (10.13).

No install disc or administer pass word for OSK 10.5.8.

John, I am sorry to say the best way is go buy either Mac OS 10.5 or the upgrade to 10.6. As you get a couple of screens into the install process you will see the Menu Bar appear across the top of the screen. There is an option to reset the password.

How to reset the master password for g4 mac powerbook ?

1. Obtain a Mac OSX install disc (buy one from apple or try Ebay) 2. Insert the disc then click on the "Install Mac OS" icon. Then click the restart button. 3. DONT INSTALL! Just click through enough of the windows to get to the regular set of choices on the menu bar. One of those choices is UTILITIES and one of the choices there is RESET PASSWORD.
Simple, but you should know that anyone with a Mac OSX install disc can gain access to your computer.

Mac Powerbook shows file wih flashing question mark, won't boot.

The flashing question mark means that the computer can't find an OS.
If the computer previously was working, start up from the OSX disc and run 'Disc Utility' from the 'Utilities' menu in the top toolbar.
Run 'First Aid' to check and repair any errors.
If the computer still can't find an OS then you will need to re-install OSX.

Installing OSX version from a dmg file

It is possible to install the OS from an image that's been generated on an external HDD as well, but you can't install the OS from a disk image that you're running within the OS. If you lost your installation disc, you can get a replacement by calling Apple.

Some of the start up files have been corrupted or are missing. Start up from the OSX system disc and them run Disc Utilities from the installer toolbar. Check the hard drive for errors. Repair any errors if they are found. If it's not possible for Disc First Aid to repair the hard drive you will need to replace the drive and re-install OSX.
