Check the jumper settings on the back of the drive, if this is the primary HD, set it to master, if secondary, set it to slave, if secondary still does not recognize, switch the ide cable so that the two drives are not on the same one.

I was unable to detect an SATA (Samsung 1TB Spinpoint) drive on a Vista machine. Reset the power and SATA cable, then re-booted, going to into the CMOS/BIOS on reboot. Ensured auto-detect was enabled. Drive was seen in CMOS but not in Windows. I'm "Vista challnegeded" but after verifying that the SATA HDD was seen in Device Manager, found the disk management module which allowed me to format the drive.

Try setting the BIOS so that "AUTO DETECT" is set for hard drive or set each setting manually...heads, sectors, landing zone....read the hard drive label

You did not indicate that the 40 Gb hard drive had Windows installed on it and whether it was the original hard disk for this computer.
There is a possibility the 40Gb hard drive is faulty.
Try installing the 40Gb hard drive as a slave drive with the 80Gb drive as the master drive (don't forget to set the jumper on the 40Gb hard drive as Slave. Check the BIOS to see if it detects the 40Gb hard drive, and when the computer boots up, if it can see the 40Gb hard drive and opens the various folders and files, then the hard drive is OK.

HDD unable to detect at My Computer

Well first I would pull the hard drive out of the case. I would then get a USB to IDE/SATA drive cable. I would connect the drive not being able to be detected to another computer via USB.

If it works the drive is still good but the data might be corrupt. If the data is corrupt I would be sure to get any stuff you can off of it and basically reformat and reload.
