Hi depending on the application of what the engine is on one wire is the charge circuit and on machines with headlights the other circuit is used.
Hope this helps
Mark.

Older 12hp briggs and stratton engine with missing wires

should only need three... one for the kill wire ( most likely goes to the plate that the throttle cable hooks to) ... one for the charging system ( 3 amp dc charge ) or two from the charging system ( 1- 3 amp dc charge and 1- ac charge wire... and depending on how old you might or might not have a wire that goes to the bottom of the carb ( i would guess not in this case but always check )
only other wire would be for the starter if equipped...

2006 harley davidson softail classic engine light and battery light comes on. then when riding it died. changed battery, but don't think that the charging system isnt charging battery. how do i fix.

Hi Anonymous, perform the following tests:
1. Fill acid type batteries to proper levels.
2. Charge battery overnight at 1-2 amps you need 12.5 volts or better after charging.
3. Hook up battery positive cable, then with your multimeter on the milliamp scale connect one lead to the negative battery post and the other lead to the ground cable. Meter should read 3 milliamps or less, 10 milliamps with a radio, 15 milliamps with radio and CB. If your meter reads higher you need to isolate the circuit by pulling fuses and circuit breakers one at a time and observe meter for drop in aprerage then get out your test light and track down the short in that circuit.
3. Make sure all connections are clean and tight especially the negative cable at both ends.
4. Hook up volt meter to battery and start engine, if meter falls below 9.5 v while cranking replace battery.
5. With engine running at 3600 RPM battery should read 14.3-14.7 volts if not continue tests.
6. Unplug voltage regulator from alternator at crankcase by front of primary cover.
7. To test voltage regulator go to: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F8EjV0IjW9Q
8. With ohm meter, one lead grounded, touch alternator pin meter should read infinity, if not replace stator.
9. With ohm meter, both leads touching alternator pins meter should read 0.1 to 0.2 ohms on 1989 and later models. 0.2 to 0.4 ohms 1988 and earlier models, if not replace stator.
10. With volt meter set on AC scale, both leads touching alternator pins meter should read
16 to 20 volts AC for every 1000 RPM'S 1989 and later and 19 to 26 volts AC for every 1000 RPMS. If not replace rotor.

I purchased a new pool pump and want to hook it up. There are 2 brass screws. Which screw do I hook the black wire to and which screw do I hook the white wire to?

It does not matter which wire goes to which post. As long as you put one on each and the ground wire on the green screw it will work fine. Be sure you select the proper voltage if your motor is dual rated. It must be set to match the line voltage present at the motor for it to work properly.

Vehicle: '97 Nissan PU, alternator

ok we have four connections at the alternator( black wire is ground) (white with blue positive direct from the battery)
and two wires connector in the regulator(yellow with black that goes to charge indicator the red light and goes to fuse 7 10a fuse block inside) the blue with yellow goes to fuse 65- 7.5a in the left fron engine comparment fuse box))#1 check for ground at the black wire= #2 check for positive at the white with blue wire (allwas with power) this wire is protected with 100a fuse is in the left front engine comparment fuse box,
remenber== check the 100a fuse
and the two fuses that protect the regulator.
when you turn the ignition switch to the on position power goes to the alternator by the yellow black wire and activate
the alternator to work.

I'm working on a 90 cc Polaris atv. I'm not getting any charge.

It should have a 3 phase charging system. Do an ohms check. look for 3 wires either white or yellow coming out of the motor. more than likely it will be on the left side of the motor ( sitting on the bike ) . put your meter on the horshoe of your meter ( OHMS ) and check wire 1 to 2 1 to 3 then wire 2 to 1 and 2 to 3. you should get numbers of some sort. If you have OFL, OL Out of limits.... on any of the legs ( wires ) then the stator is bad. More than likely it's the regulator. On the regulator , with the meter still in ohms, you'll have a red wire, a black wire. Those are the wires your meter's positive ( red ) lead will hook up to. red on red. then check the other wires ( except the black ) for numbers. then put the black lead on the same wire the red lead was just hooked up to. and do the same test. If you have numbers going both directions then the regulator is bad. You should get numbers one direction and OFL, OL the other way. Then do the same test on the black wire withe same outcome as the first set of Regulator tests.

Switch missing on 10 hp Tecumseh engine that is installed on a

First I have never owned a Tecumseh Tiller. How that got attached to me I don't know. I do have a 10 Hp Tecumseh Engine that I wish to check out if it is good or not before I buy a switch. It has a Brown wire that goes to the low oil shut down sender. It also has a green wire and a black wire. All I need to know is which wires do I need to put together so I can check if the engine is firing or not.
