Xbox console says unplayable disc

The unplayable disc problem is usually the motor that spins the disc.If the disc is making a loud grinding noise it is a magnet issue,but if there is no unusual sound then the motor is probably the problem.If you listen close when you put the game in and it says reading you will not hear the disc spinning.Most of the time the motor has just built up some corrosion and is stuck it will usually keep spinning once you get it started.With the 360 on put the disc in and let it say unplayable disc,then eject the disc with the 360 console still on,next using your finger try to spin the disc gently clockwise and close the tray quickly.You want the disc to be spinning a little the next time it tries to read the disc.If this works it may work for a long time or you may have to do it every time you change discs or power on the console.If this does not work youtube shows a way to use stiff paper to spin the disc with the disc in the tray and the tray closed.Go to youtube and type in unplayable disc fix.These are two ways to temporarily or sometimes permanently fix the problem without taking the console apart.If these solutions do not fix the problem you can take the cover off and manually spin the disc to get it started,but if it is still under warranty do not take anything apart.If it is not youtube also shows how to take apart the console and clean the motor.Hope this helps someone.

You can just open and close the disk player a few times, it usually works.

You need to be more specific, make sure your games are 100% clean and do not have any scratches. Try a different disk and see if the same thing happens, other than this all you can do is take the game back for refund or swap.

I have just had the unplayable disc problem.

After an hour of frustratingly opening up the drive and closing it, turning it off at the wall, letting it cool down, I decided to read the posts above.

After reading the one from a fellow guest about spinning the disc? I assume this is after pulling it apart? Though I thought, rather than pull apart the box why not try just giving the console a 'light' shake while it starts spinning the disc just in case.

It worked! and what is even stranger, now it works without spinning.

If your xbox says its not able to read disc or says you have to put in xbxox game while you just did..

well in general that means you only moments away from the famous ring of death which means your xbox is broken and you are fucked.

Hey Guys, i had the same problem. too
i found i guess what is a temporary fix
open your tray and start spinning the disk very gentley
dont do it too hard or it will sctrach your disk and that would not be good......
close the tray while spinning your disk gentley and it should work

if u know how to open up your console then it would be better to clean up the lens with a soft cotton tip.And remember to put the xbox 360 in the horizontal position because in that position the console reads discs better.

Yeah, I was playing CoD4 for a while, took a break...
Came back, and now everything is "Unplayable Discs", including CoD, which is still in mint condition, and all other games I have, as well as DVD's.
Second 360 to randomly fail on me, gg imo.

You cant put any sata dvd drive into the xbox 360 as the power connections are different. If you have managed to do otherwise I'd like to see it if possible.

I'm afraid the only and best solution if you're not technically minded is to report back to m$ but if you feel adventurous then by all means replace the dvd drive but it MUST be xbox 360 specific. you can usually find these on ebay and suchlike. for pretty cheap.

This could be that your DVD rom has stopped working properly. See if you can hear it spin up at all. It may be spinning too slow to to read the actual data on the discs. Send it in if you are under warranty. If not buying a replacement is cheap, and installing is not that hard if you can fix a PC.

The xbox 360 will use pretty much any serial ATA dvd rom. I recommend 16x - 24x readable only / rw don't work.

Also some really off brands have been known to fail as well.
There is also a website that sells the exact same unit that is in the system already. We don't recommend it, but it gets the job done.

Two problems happen with these DVD roms, one is a glue melting issue, which will cause, "Unplayable Disc" errors, and "The Grinding" which is common cause of warranty service. Truth is MS will just replace it with the same inferior DVD rom. You are better off getting your own in reality. Spend the $50 now and save the 3 weeks and the head ache later.
