Hello mmlv6...the Barracuda 7200.7 series has been around awhile...if it's been in use all these years then it has performed well and you have gotten your moneys worth from it. I would recommend replaceing it with the new 7200.12 series of your capacity choice...You can remove your exsiting hard drive and install it an external drive bay or docking station and all data on it can be saved and/or transfered...providing it will still spin and you have no major sector damage.
Good luck...i hope this helps...please rate me a fixya.

Hard drive will not boot

Usually means you have lost sectors on your HDD, and a program is trying to recover the boot data that was stored in those locations. Wait a reasonable amount of time (a day maybe), and let the computer attempt recovery. If recovery fails, a format will be required, then a complete reload of the disk. You may want to consider replacing the drive, as this problem may indicate that the drive is failing.
If you have data on the drive that you need, then trying booting from a Linux distro CD, don't over write the disk, and run it in "Test or Try" mode. You can actually run a complete OS, with GUI, from this typr of CD. This will give you access to your hard drive. You may be able to read any files that are not corrupted, and copy them to some other media. Just don't write to your original disk before you have removed all the data you want.

I receive a no operation system message while booting

Buy a new hard disk drive! Use the 2 golden Gateway, Applications, Drivers, & Operating System disc, also known as Restoration DVD to reinstall your Gateway programs & operating system. After that, reinstall your backups.

How much disk space do you need? Why buy a 320 GB HDD if you only use 4 GB? So, keep the bytes down if you don't need them and that will keep the costs down, too!

The Gateway support discs can be had at: www.Gateway.com/Support .

When installing xp on new hard drive in a gateway GT5056 it says NTLDR is missing What does this mean

If you are attempting to install Windows XP and are receiving this error message as the computer is booting verify that your computer BIOS has the proper boot settings. For example, if you are attempting to run the install from the CD-ROM make sure the CD-ROM is the first boot device, and not the hard disk drive.
When the computer is booting you should receive the below prompt.
Press any key to boot from the CD
Important: When you see this message press any key such as the Enter key immediately, otherwise it will try booting from the hard drive and likely get the NTLDR error again.

My Gateway used computer was working and now it won't boot-up and gives message that Hard drive connection is not good. The computer makes clicking or more of a tapping sound and now won't boot. thanks

It sounds like your hard drive has failed, IE.. the clicking/tapping sound. You could have the hard drive tested to be sure. You could swap out the hard drive to another machine and try it.

What does ' a disk read error occurred press ctr alt del to restart, everytime i do it it gives me the same error??

You could have a hard drive problem. To check the hard drive boot up to the Windows XP cd in repair mode. At the C prompt type: chkdsk /r
This will start a program called Check Disk that will evaluate your hard drive and attempt to fix any errors. it Check Disk is successful it will complete 100% and return to a C prompt. You can then attempt to reboot. If Check Disk finds unrecoverable errors you will need to purchase a new hard drive and rebuild the OS.

At about 3:00 am on thursdays, Windows XP closes and C drive shuts down. It is not a re-boot because the motherboard power stays on. When I turn the computer off and turn it back on (the 1st time)it...

Sounds like the computer is coming from sleep, standby or hibernation mode. Go to the power settings in the control panel, and disable all of these options. Disable your screen saver as well. Leave the machine on for a day and see if it happens again after this. Post your findings, please...

Formating hard disk

IF the old PC motherboard will recognize the drive while booting up, Windows 98 will also see the drive after boot-up. You may have to reformat the drive into smaller partitions.

All you have to do is physically install the drive in your old computer and attempt to boot. After the computer boots up, if the drive does not show up shut down and put the drive back in your old computer. Use the manufacturer's partitioning software available on their website to change the drive from one 250 Gb partitions to five 50 Gb partitions.

Hard Disk Drive Not Detected

Does your hard drive get detected in the BIOS? If yes then you can recover data by plugging that hard drive as secondary and running a recovery application like Recover My Files.
