I want to set the receiver to surround sound. The indicator only shows two speakers I want it to show five

What is the source of your sound? By default, receiver will use only those channels that are used in the input signal - if you play CD in stereto, it will use only 2 front speakers. If you play DVD with 5.1 audio, it will use all 5 speakers (+ subwoofer if you have one).

However you can use one of the bulitin "sound field program" modes to mix the 2 channel stereo music to all speakers. On front panel, press "PROGRAM < >" buttons to select the one you like. Or on remote control, repeately press MOVIE, MUSIC or STEREO buttons. You can check your manual for description of each sound field program.

Hello, I have a Sony STR-D85 surround sound system. I need to connect my phone to the system so that my phone's music plays through my surround sound speakers. The front of the console has a headphone...

Headphone jack is an output not input jack. Your going to need a cord to go from your headphone jack(output) of your phone to audio input on your receiver. The cord has a mini stereo plug to the phone and RCA plugs of left and right to your receiver auxiliary input. Good luck..

I just bought an Onkyo tx-s804 receiver. and some new rear surrounds. Since I am moving, have not set up anything formally, but have plugged my dvd player into the front video 4 input via an optical...

PCM is what it's receiving from the DVD player. The player has output bitstream settings, too, maybe even speaker configurations and distances. Read its manual.

How do you make the 6.1 channel work? Right now it just says digital. Does 6. 1 channel sound better?

6.1 stands for six speakers and one sub-woofer - a total of seven actual speakers giving you the surround sound effect. Before it can play a surround sound environment, the media - a CD or DVD must have it encoded on the disc, like a movie that has 6.1 surround sound recorded on it or a music CD with recorded surround sound. Otherwise, it will just play stereo audio - two speakers and the others are redundant. And yes, it does sound better as if you are in the actual area it was produced - like if you were there.

Should all the surround sound speakers be working when I am watching satelite TV? Mine do not, just the front left & front right have sound.

All speakers should be working. The display on the Sony unit will tell you which speakers are enabled with a box illuminated and each speaker that is decoding with the speakers abrevation eg SL for surround left also illuminated. If these are not displaying then you need to check your playback mode. If play back is set to 2CH you will only get the front speakers. Try setting play back to AFD ProLogicII, Movie, or Music. If this does not get the speakers running then check the speaker configuration in the setup menu. It should be set to 5.1, if not set it and press enter to save it. If this is setup correctly then try the level settings in your menu. Each speaker has a setting that can be adjusted up or down to effect the loudness of the speakers. If this does not do it then check the connectons at each end of the suround speakers ie, at the receiver and at the speaker.

No sound for *some* blu ray discs / can't get a menu

Some blu ray disc play fine. Others play the menu music, but when the feature starts, the sound disappears completely. And then others don't play music at all, no sound what do ever.

My kenwood receiver has

If you are referring to the rear speakers, it is normal. The rear speakers are not supposed to get a signal as loud as the fronts or center.

A surround sound system was originally developed for playing movies and the rear channels are for effects. In most surround modes the center channel will always be the loudest with the widest range of audio signals.

I have been repairing these type of systems since they have been on the market, so I know a lot about them.

This Kenwood you have is like most surround systems and does not have a feature that you would obviously like to have, 5 channel stereo. Only a few surround systems have this feature and they cost much more than the Kenwood systems. Denon and Marantz both make one with that feature. In 5 channel stereo you get a full signal to all the speakers. All the other surround modes you get a much lower signal to the rear speakers.

So in closing, you do not need it fixed, there is nothing wrong with it. You have a common complaint that many people have who buy a surround sound system but are not fully understanding of just what a surround systems is supposed to be capable of
. This is something that the salesman who sold it to you should have explained to you, that way you could have purchased a system that would have better suited your needs.

I would be happy to give you more help if you would like, just let me know. As I already stated, I have many years of experience with surround sounds systems, in fact I own the exact Kenwood model that you have and I like it very much. It is about the best you can get for that price.

Sound not coming from left side surround sound speaker or my right side front speaker

it is highly likely that you're TV is outputting mono sound, hence the left channel only. check your physical connections to the TV and the balance / channel volume on the television as well.
