To start ensure that there is no dirt or foreign object (eg. cellotape or paper) obstructing cartridge sensor, or contact inside the ink carriage.
Ensure you are removed completely cellotape strip from cartridge, and ensure ink carriage door is closing the cartridge slot.
Try removing ink tanks (cartridges), unplugging printer power cord, and repeating cartridge installation several times after re-connecting power.

If you still get the problem, then either the ink cartridge is faulty, or the wiring to ink carriage has a broken contact to black ink cartridge sensor.
In that case call immediately the vendor, discuss a test and eventual replacement to be done at the shop. If the printer is brand new it is not worth buying a replacement cartridge to test the printer.
If the printer had been purchased from the Internet call the seller and arrange replacement , if seller says that you must test with a different cartridges (that must be done ) tell them to send you a cartridge, as the part may be expensive, and printer is new.

Error message, cartridge error "cartridge

I'm not sure what ou mean by fairly new. Is it a color cartridge and have you been printing photographs? Is it an HP cartridge or a generic brand? Cartridges are used up very fast if you are printing photos. I print a lot of photos and have found that although they cost more, the cartridges made for each particular printer usually last longer and do a better job. Are the cartridge lights blinking, as they do when yo have low ink?

It could also be a problem with the cartridge. Try removing the cartridge and very carefully use a damp paper towel to gently clean the printer head of the cartridge. Do you get any ink when you do this? If you do, try putting the cartridge carefully back into place. Check the socket where the cartridge goes when you do this. Does everything seem to be in order?

Do a power reset (turn the printer off with the off button, unplug it for a full minute, then plug it back into the wall socket.) turn the printer back on. If you still have the message,
go to this site http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/product?product=1119598&lc=en&cc=us&dlc=en&lang=en&cc=us&submit=Go%20â

You will find a video here for your printer as well as frequently asked questions, a manual download, etc.

Good luck to you.

hello, some of the time the color ink cartridge can cause the problem, especially if its a refilled ink, but at same time, i do know some of the new inks right out of the box will fail. so try with a new color cartridge first.

My officejet 6310 all in one is telling me that there is a cartridge error.

Hi,
if you get a message saying " this is not an official cartridge or similar " click on use anyway. Newer cartridges, have chips installed. so that the printer can recognise low ink levels. if the new cartridge is not an official product. this error message will come up anyway. by clicking use it anyway ( Or similar ) it won,t make any difference at all to the printer. The big-companys want you to buy thier expensive refills, thats all it is.
Hope this solves your problem.
