First my 295 would only work on external batt.and then the display went black,I opened it up and found a screw missing from the connection to the internal batteries and reinstalled it.Now The unit is working with internal or external power but has no light in the display. It's visable when held in bright sunlight at the correct angle. Any sujestions? Also Could this be hooked up to a PDA or other device and used to read the disllay?. Thanks Keith

There's a chance your display is dimmed. Try turning it on in a dark room (the bathroom with the light off, for instance). Once you hear it beep to start up, slowly count to five then press Enter for the welcome screen. Now press the power button (top right, red, looks like a light bulb) then press the Up nav button a few times (the top of the 4-way directional). That adjusts the brightness.

You may also need to adjust the contrast - that's left and right, you don't need to push any buttons. Just play with it till you can start to see something.

If that doesn't work, then yes - the previous poster would be right, there's probably an issue with the display. If it happened after you opened it up, then try opening it up again and checking (carefully!) all the cables to the display - one will be for the information on the screen, and another will be for the backlight and power. Make sure those are connected nice and tight.

And no, I'm afraid you can't hook it up to a PC or a palm pilot or something to read the display. It doesn't work like that unfortunately. If you can power it on and connect it to your computer (do you have the serial cable?) then you can pull your routes and waypoints down with software called EasyGPS. But you won't be able to read what would be on the screen.

Hi there,

There are 2 chances -
1. battery have the problem - Tell me is there the same situation when it works with external power sours?
2. display have the problem - If the answer of first option 'YES' that means there is a problem with the display.

thanks

Reinstalled Windows 7 on Dell 5720 now have black border on display

connect an external monitor/tv/display and look at the patterns of the external display. If it's clean, that means your display is the one damaged. Reinstalling windows won't help at all.
Try touching, moving, pulling, pushing the display from the top edges, and if you see any change on that border, you can tell the cause.
Usually the cause of this black bands to appear are for miss using the opening or closing of the displays, that is, using one corner to open or close the screen.
Hope that helps.

My Garmin MAP 295 won't power up. Third time in 5 years.

I have discovered an intermittent problem on my 10 year old 295 when powered by batteries.
It appears that the chrome plating is de-laminating from the battery contacts that are either side of the back panel attachment hole. At first glance it looks perfect but if you run a fingernail or other small item across the face of the contact you will see and hear a movement as if there a a loose layer of foil over it. This is causing all manner of faults including 'external power lost, shut-down in 30 seconds' when the external power was not even connected at all!

Will not run for more than a few moments off battery power

Watch out for that - if you use regular batteries, they probably won't like that. They're not designed for recharging. The GPSMap 295 can batteries and external power at the same time because it has circuitry that switches between the two - power is not being sent through the batteries.

This guy - http://www.fixya.com/support/t2487552-garmin_gpsmap_295_will_not_run_from - opened his up and found a loose screw. I have the same problem with mine which I'm about to try. This may help you as well.

Garmin gpsmap 295 will not run from internal battery power

I had the same problem. Reluctantly, I removed the batteries and the 8 phillips screws from the the case back perimeter. Be careful on opening. The unit is designed to open from the top and hinge at he bottom to keep the ribbon cables from being stressed. The unit should open nicely and lie flat on the table with the two bottom halves butted against each other. Get a magnifier and ensure the printed circuit board attached to the bottom half has all 3 screws. (I found one missing that has 2 functions - securing the board and delivering battery power. Mine had wedged against a piece of clear plastic...it was hard to find!!!) I carefully removed the wedged screw and returned to the circuit board left most attach point. Close up the unit and we were back in GPS heaven. Battery power restored!!!! and my $250.00 still in my pocket. Yipppeee.

Tried hooking the computer to an external monitor. Got the welcome screen ok, then it lost sync and went black. Tried it on another plasma; same result. SVGA cable connection.

Hi there. When you connect an external display, your laptop clones your desktop to the external display, including resolution settings. First you need to check what resolution settings the plasma can display. If your laptop is set to a resolution that the external monitor can't display, then you will lose the display once the resolution settings are loaded. You can change the laptop resolution in your Display Settings.

If you don't know what settings the external monitor can display, just open your Display Settings and set your laptop resolution to 1024x768. Almost all new monitor/tv's can display it. Connect your external display, and see what happens. If it works, but the resolution doesn't look right, then just move the resolution along one more, until you find one you're comfortable with.

N.B. Some monitors/tv's "jump" resolutions. i.e. the monitor can display 1024x768, 1300x768, but not 1280x800.

Another thing to remember is that if you are running Windows Vista, you may need to check that the Windows Mobility Center recognises the external display that you are trying to use. You can find Windows Mobility Center by clicking Control Panel, then Mobile PC. It should now be listed on the screen.

Let me know how it goes, and if it works, please rate.

How does a external USB SATA drive dock

yes you can but whether that would make it work or not is a different story.

It depends if the hard drive is still working or not however it would test for certain whether it is working or not.

Assembling Odyssey Lstand

lol....after reading your problem and then posting mine I had an idea. I went to youtube.com and found out that in order to hook up the U CLAMPS...you have to disconnect the table top attachment and connect the U Clamps to the short bases. You then dont need longer screws you use the little black screws that came with the stand. I went to Guitar Center after I did mine and confirmed that theirs was set up the same way....lol...LETS PARTY NOW !! This calls for a celebration party...lol GOOD LUCK AND TEAR THOSE PARTIES UP

No lighting

Your unit has lighting, it's just that it's set so low that you can barely see it (or not at all in bright sunlight). If it wasn't working at all then you wouldn't be able to see anything.
When the unit is on, press the power/lighting button (the red one) briefly and repeat. You will see it cycle through the highest, lowest, and user pre-sets. Stop on any of those and use the arrow up/down key to choose your own level. Press enter when finished. You can do this even when the unit appears black in bright sunlight.
