AO Smith Heater/Vacation Mode

Most recent power shot has intellivent gas control valve:
Copy following link to troubleshoot by type of gas control valve:

Generally you can wake up the control by holding down both temperature adjustment buttons for 1 second then release.
Otherwise, add a comment and give more information, if this is new heater or old heater that stopped working, and what error code if any you are experiencing.

AO Smith service handbooks:

If the igniter is not turning off, then that would explain early failure, and it would be caused by the control chipset

AO Smith Water heater FPSH50-260 keeps blowing fuses

FPSH series is a power vented residential gas water heater.

1) The blower is plugged into 120Volt outlet. If blower has short, then it will trip breaker.
Blower could be Fasco model 7021-10195, or 7021-10770. Call AO Smith: 1-800-527-1953. They will need model number and serial number located on label on side of tank.

2) Before calling AO Smith, check outlet with circuit analyzer. Outlet must have correct polarity and must be grounded. Unplug cord to water heater and run continuity test from ground prong on electrical plug to manifold tube on gas valve.

3) Also if a fluorescent light fixture is on the same breaker, that can cause burner to short cycle.

4) Connect water heater to different outlet and see if problem continues.

5) AO SmIth has service manuals for the FPSH series that download to your computer:

The pilot light on my hot water heater keeps going out

If you have a blower and electronic gas control on your AO Smith water heater, then reading the manual for your specific product is essential for troubleshooting the problem.

As you know, tank-type gas water heaters require periodic inspection and cleaning of burner parts and combustion chamber.. The manual is important for giving instructions and advisories to the homeowner and technical specialist.

If you have ordinary direct vent water heater with mechanical gas control the following link has some troubleshooting resources that might help:
