I tried to search the topics but couldn't find this exact problem.
Power went out the other day for 5 minutes. When it came back on it seems the fridge isn't working.
Embraco Compressor EGZ 90hlp on a Kenmore 106.56566400 Cold Spot ?
I think we bought it in 2005 or 2006.
Any way, the fan is running and there is power up to the compressor. The relay clicks, compressor cycles on for about 5 seconds, relay clicks and cycles off for about 4 minutes. This keeps repeating but the cond. fan never stops. I'm trying to get some ideas since I really don't know this system.

Re: Kenmore not cooling, compressor cycles on and off
It sounds like the compressor relay mounted to the side of the compressor is out. Very common problem on these units. The replacement relay is supposed to be stronger and less likely to give a problem. Remove the relay and shake it. If you hear it rattling inside it is definately burned out.
Do not replace it with a 3 in 1 or kickstart relay. It will work fine for a few months and burn the compressor out. Get the correct replacement part.

sounds like you need to replace the ptc overload on the compressor as this component supplies start and run power to the compressor and its getting weak and short cycling the compressor, they just unplug and plug into the side of the compressor and when you remove it shake it by hand and if you hear it rattle thats a good sign its bad
I'd personally just go and put in a aftermarket start relay and overload. Look up part # IC41 or IC81, or even a rco/hs810. it's been a while since I've used them, but they work. Unless the unit is under warranty there's no consiquence. If you have warranty, these parts will void said coverage.
Good luck, hope that helps
If the out door fan keeps running and the compressor cycles off that would be the overload in the compressor.
What keeps the windings cool is the refrigerant back to the compressor.
For the overload to cycle it would have to be either not enough cooling back to the compressor or high amp draw, which could be the metering device (txv or orifice) or low on charge, or other things would be a bad capacitor, sometimes a bad start relay not staying open, when compressor gets up to speed or anything causing the compressor to draw high amps.
To check the refrigerant, he needs to check the superheat at the compressor it should be appoximately 12° to15°, and next time the compressor goes off if you shut the power off and feel the top of the compressor and if it's hot 130° or higher it's probably refrigerant.
the most likely problem will be the start relay for the compressor. the clicking noise is the compressor trying to start and then the relay cycles back off. the part number is 8201786 and can be purchased from any loal appliance parts house thru sears.com or any othe online parts source. the kit comes with good instructions so you should be able to repair yourself.
it would be a good idea to unplug the refrig until you get it repaired to prevent possible compressor damage. thanks peyton..
Ok this is a huge issue on many refrigerators of all brands that are using a tecumseh compressor. Let me guess that you hear a buzzing for a few secs then a click. And then 15mins or so later buzz...click??The compressor wont start for hours... sometimes even a whole day. Ive gone into detail the whole cycling senario in some early posts in my profile. This explains why you said it stopped cooling. Finally it starts. Only to stop again soon. I cant believe that a tech would tell you he cant check it. All he would have had to do is cycle the unit several times and he would have seen ,most likely, the issue. Inexperience is all that is. But anyhow make sure you get that compressor replaced while its still inder warranty. Dont take no for an answer or youll be stuck with a large bill. Let me know if If i was accurate here thanks.......
