Do NOT turn the handwheel the reverse direction.

If your machine is mechanical, most likely it hasn't been cleaned and oiled for a long time. Old sewing machine dries out and turns to glue which then prevents parts from moving like they should.

How to Oil Vintage Sewing Machine

Tri-Flow Synthetic Lube is very good because it has little teflon beads. It also does not dry out like sewing machine oil will. Then applying heated air from a handheld hairdryer will help loosen it.

Do NOT oil plastic/nylon, cams, or belts.

Consew 2033R commercial sewing machine just stopped sewing with the needle down and I can't get the wheel to turn at all?

Force the hand wheel in the normal direction of travel. You can't break it. The mechanism has just locked up. Once it is free, remove the needle and run it full speed for 20 seconds.

The tip given to me by my dry cleaner / seamstress. It happened to one of her 4 industrial machines. She said she needed a strong man and that was me.

Why is the wheel on the right hand side of my machine very stiff when turning

the "hand wheel" on a sewing machine is meant to only advance the mechanism far enough to thread and set the needle , the motor should be used to run the machine else wise , as its turning every thing inside the machine to keep all the functions in "TimE" as models increase in there complexity there hand wheels are harder to move as more stuff needs to be kept in "time" now , also on some models the bobbin winder is directly powered by the hand wheel , if its not in use it should be disengaged completely

Why does my hand wheel feel springy? why won't it turn and move the needle?

Is the bobbin winding mechanism activated? That will usually prevent the handwheel from turning and moving the needle. Otherwise, it could be broken...

Singer Fashion Mate 257 locked

Hi Geno: First, it is never good to turn your hand wheel in the opposite direction. This action can throw your machine out of time. So please don't ever do that.

To diagnose the problem. First replace the needle with a new one and make sure it is correctly oriented and fully inserted in the needle bar. Take out the bobbin case and bobbin. Turn the hand wheel toward you. Is it still locking up?

If it is, Take off the presser foot, open up the feed dog and bobbin area and turn the hand wheel until the needle is in the lowest point. Where is the shuttle hook (pointed bit) in relation to the needle? Is the needle hitting the shuttle? If it is... your timing is "advanced" If the needle is at the lowest point an the shuttle hook is well behind the scarf of the needle the timing is "********"

Now, if you find you can't even get this far. It could be a very dry machine, excess fluff or threads between moving parts or a bent arm.

Here is an instruction manual in case you need it. Not much in the way of service info but it may help you trouble shoot.

Needle wont go up and down.

well,it seem that your upper camshaft was stuck due to several factor on mechanical linkages and maybe on gears. You have to isolate the checking since you have clean lower bobbins free from dirt and thread/fabrics chips. If there an opening on top of machine open it to check some mechanical destorsion or breakage.Check some broken gears inside. If nothing try to open also at the bottom of machine cover and there are also belt and gears connected to the motors and bobbins shuttle holder if so oil all shafting oil port, oil port bushing specially on bushing near hand wheel there is port for oil,
check also motor assembly of machine, you can disconnect belt from motor release the bolt holding motor adjust to lower tension belt and release the belt.Take some tools such as monkey pliers or small pipe wrench that can hold hand wheel just crack in order to move suddenly after oiling for several hours sometime bushing and shafting rushes emerged or if you have anti rush spray put in on.After cracking and you can move a little crack only by your hand several time lleft and right until all linkages free from rush.If you can move all parts and hand wheel rotate freely.Check also motor by rotating the small pulley conncted to motor if free to move.if ok put back and reassembly all parts disconnected.try to move again by hand if free to move after all asssembly.Run machine using foot pedal.
